Indian Restaurant: Indique Heights, Chevy Chase, MD
On a recent trip to our Washington DC office I had the opportunity to go to the Indique Heights Indian restaurant for dinner. This is not your usual Indian restaurant, a little more high end, with an eclectic menu that includes some interesting Street Snacks and appetizers as well as some slightly different main course choices. The décor was very pleasant and they even had an area to sit outside, definitely a date spot.
I chose to sit at one of the low tables in the bar, which might have been a mistake as it was like eating dinner at a coffee table, not too comfortable. Great if you're just drinking and eating appetizers, but not a good idea for dinner, at least not for me.
I decided to try one of their Street Snacks, Lamb Fry (Kerala) , which according to the menu was "Boneless lamb cooked with cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, fennel, ginger & coconut strips". Absolutely delicious!! The lamb was bursting with flavor and came strangely, to me, with a rice accompaniment. Interestingly, as you can see from the photographs, they form most of the components in the dish, especially the rice, into wide upside down cupcake form. I guess that's the way they do it at nicer restaurants.
For my main course I decided to try Chicken Chettinad, which was listed as "Not for the faint hearted!" Since I am a spice junkie that comment alone made it my first choice. As you can see the main course came with an array of things on the plate. Included in it was a small dish of Dal, two formed rice sides: one regular pullao and the other lemon rice, (a lot of rice if you include the street snack too) and a side of vegetable curry, which contained peas, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. (Was my mother back there making sure I get my daily requirement of veggies?!?! )
The Chicken Chettinad was a good sized portion in a modern square side dish. It was spicy, but not too spicy, and was extremely tasty – a very good choice for me. Although on reflection I must admit I've had spicier food, I can only assume "the faint hearted" in DC are people that can't handle Wendy's chili.
All-in-all though it was a very nice dinner, if somewhat pricey, although I'm sure that's because it's DC/Chevy Chase. If you're in the area it's definitely worth a visit!!!
