Finally, the family…united. SQL Server BI Project templates now available in Visual Studio 2012

Beside the below mentioned information, I have written an updated compatibility sheet for the avaialable combinations or Visual Studio / SQL Server and the BI templates which is published here.
We waited and hoped and now we finally have them. SQL Server BI project templates in Visual Studio 2012.
This includes
- Project templates for
- SSAS Analysis services projects (.dwproj)
- SSRS Reporting services projects (.rptproj)
- SSIS Integration services projects (.dtproj)

Be aware of the following:
- Select “New instance” on the installation dialog if you have SQL Server x64 installed. Otherwise, you probably get the error "The CPU architecture of installing feature(s) is different than the instance specified. To continue, add features to this instance with the same architecture."

should the setup really work on a 64-bit system with a 64-bit SQL Server 2012 installed? the setup is only 32-bit as Visual Studio 2012 (Shell) is 32-bit only but it tries to install 32-bit version of SP1 for SQL Server 2012 which fails and therefore installation is not possible. Why is the SP1 included in the setup and why does it not detect it correctly that SP1 is already installed on 64-bit SQL Server ?Anonymous

will the BI templates for VS2012 included in the next release SSDT ? SSDT for VS2010 includes all templates while SSDT for VS2012 does not include the BI template and those must be installed separately. Or will SSDT for VS2010 split into two separate setups for SQL Server database projects and for BI projects like it is now with VS2012 ?Anonymous

HI Daniel, right now we have two separate packages for this. SSDT comes as a package which can either used with VS2010 or the VS2010 Shell or as a package for VS2012 as mentioned here: blogs.msdn.com/.../available-today-ssdt-december-2012.aspx. As you said BI templates for VS2010 are already included in VS2010, VS2012 (at this point) needs the mentioned installer above for this. -JensAnonymous

To continue, add features to this instance with the same architecture." This is investigated and I´ll let you know when there are any news. The SP1 installer you are seeing is not purely SP1, this is the instance / feature installer of SQL Server and for my opinion it makes sense going forward to integrate this into the installer making the DEV Tools a "first class citizen" of SQL Server and not of Visual Studio as done in SQL Server Data Tools. I disagree with the above statement: the BI stuff is a developer tool and therefore it should be really part of Visual Studio and not SQL Server. Including SSMS as management studio make sense to be included in SQL Server installer suite but the project templates for SQL Server database and BI stuff is usually not installed on the same machine as a production SQL Server. Besides that the interval for updates to SQL Server and SSDT are different as updates for SSDT can be released in a shorter intervall as SQL ServerAnonymous

From that point of view, yes. And now comes the big but which cannot be eloborated further here, having the opportunity having things preloaded in the installer as well as having it as a separate download makes sense. Imagine a future where you don´t have any differences in SQL Server Managment Studio as well as Visual Studio together without any hard borders. :-) -jensAnonymous

a comment from Greg Low about architecture mismatch: Make sure you choose the "New Instance" option (strange as that might seem). Otherwise, you'll get an error that says the following: Rule "Same architecture installation" failed.Anonymous

Quick question on a 64 bit environment - what if I don't want a new SQL Server installation. Won't the 'choose new instance' automatically install a SQL Server Express?Anonymous

Hi Preet, that is actually the misunderstanding, the "new instance" does not install a new instance per se. You will be able to install the tools only in the subsequent wizard pages. -JensAnonymous

Hi I['ve tried numerous times to install SSDTBI_VS2012_x86_ENU.exe It keeps failing when it gets to installing the language pack. Any suggestions for fixing would be greatly appreciated. I have Visual Studio 2012 & SQL Server 2012 installed on my laptop. During the installation it stops at "Install_VSTA2012_LangsSupport_Cpu32_Action" I'm installing a new instance of SQL Server. Would really apreciate soe suggestions to get it going. I currently have Visual Studio 2010 installed also and I can run Integration Services Projects on that no problem.Anonymous

Hi, I had a problem similar to 'SRFC08' & 'zippy'. I did a forced uninstall of "Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications 2012 Language Support" from Control Panel > Programs and Features and re-run "SSDTBI_VS2012_x86_ENU.exe" This Time setup completed successfully!
