New Windows Live SkyDrive

We've just announced the beta of our SkyDrive service (previously known with the far less cool name of Windows Live Folders). For every Live ID you get 500MB of storage space to play with. Take a look and see what you think, this is going to be really useful.

And make sure you install the little ActiveX control so you can use drag and drop to upload files. You'll find this when you select the "add files" option - there will be a banner at the bottom of the page saying "want to upload more than 5 files at a time?". Click that to install the control and start dragging files onto the web page.

It's a cool service and the name is great too - we are *definitely* getting better at naming our products.

Oh and I should add: the UK is one of the regions where SkyDrive is available, the other two being the US and India. Great news for us UK types!

Will that regional limitation apply to the final release? Given that this time we're not talking about maps or anything like that, if it is then Microsoft really need to review their understanding of what that whole internet thing means, and what it means to operate in a global market.

I think that Windows Live Folders is a much better name for an online storage service than Windows Live SkyDrive Beta...

Kevin - no this won't apply to the final release. Sean - Fair enough, what's good for one person might not be good for another. I thought it was a great name but would be interested to hear other views!

The new name has the advantage that it can be summed up in one word, "Skydrive", which is not only more concise but even manages to convey the idea of storage in the cloud...so it works for me anyway.

Hi Ian, Yeah, I like the name SkyDrive, sounds a bit like something Apple would come up with and it has to be admitted they're pretty good at the naming/design game. So yes, 'SkyDrive' I think has a nice ring to it. Got my 500Mb set up anyhow.  What's the deal with additional space if you don't want another Live ID? Are there plans for paid access to more space? Or can you 'string' Live IDs together? Cheers  Dave Mc

There's no doubt in my mind that Micrsoft plan to charge for extra space in the future. I'd really like to know pricing now because Im getting ready to setup remote storage for a lot of my files.

I don't have any further info on additional space etc, but as soon as I have something I can share with you I'll let you know.

Still there as far as I know. I use it all the time to upload. Have you had trouble finding it recently?

Does the drag and drop tool only apply to Internet Explorer? Doesnt seem to be available on other browsers such as Chrome

Hi Charlie - the drag & drop control is ActiveX which only works on Internet Explorer. You can get it to work on Firefox by installing the IETab add on, but you can't (as far as I know) get any ActiveX control to work with Chrome.
