The Maker's OS
MAKE Magazine's Maker Faire 2007 starts next week at the San Mateo Fairgrounds near San Francisco and the Windows Home Server team will be there. Or at least Ryan & I will be...
Let me introduce myself. I'm Chris Gray. I'm a software development lead on the Windows Home Server team (I was developer #2) and I am a Maker. Not only do I build software for a living, but I do it in my spare time as well (here too). In addition I build furniture.
Ryan Gammon is another developer on the team. Together we have built (pun intended) a reputation of being some of the more hard core geeks on the team. One example is the "Gammonator" (pictured here). You see, in order to stress test our protocols between PCs and the home server we need to be able to simulate network failures. So Ryan & I built this little device that has two* RJ45 Ethernet ports and RS-232 serial port. We put the device, in-line, between a client and the server, and plug the RS-232 port into a debugging PC and with a press of a button, or within a test script, and relays in the device break the Ethernet connection, simulating a hard failure.
A while back, Bald Charlie (inside joke) asked me and Ryan if we'd like to represent the product at Maker Fiare. We jumped at the opportunity and are very excited that we'll be able to meet many of you there.
We know that the geeks, hackers, & Makers of the world are not the primary target market for Windows Home Server, but we also know that the way the product has been built, makers all over the world are going to love it. It really is the ultimate "Maker's OS". You get the super easy to use end-to-end solutions for backing up your PCs, centralizing storage, and remote access but you also have the amazing power, flexibilty, and ecosystem of the Windows Server operating system underneath.
At Maker Faire we will be showing off a set of projects we threw together with Windows Home Server, the Windows Home Server SDK, and a bunch of parts. If you are going to Maker Faire, drop by the Microsoft booth and you won't be able to miss us. I'm the tall dark haired guy, and Ryan's the blond.

Very Cool! I hope you blog about the projects too for those of us not lucky enough to make it to the Faire.
