ISO Takes Control of OOXML

Getty Villa 2 Following its announcement on 2 April that Draft International Standard 29500 (known as Office Open XML) had received the necessary votes for approval as an international standard, the International Standards Organisation has moved quickly to establish processes to enable the standard to be further developed and maintained.

Significantly the designated maintenance body for OOXML - SC34 - is also responsible for ISO/IEC 26300 (the Open Document Format standard). Information available following the semi-annual meeting of ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC34 in Oslo, Norway indicates that the subcommittee intends to create three distinct Working Groups within SC34 :

  • A Working Group for Open XML
  • A Working Group for ODF
  • A Working Group for interoperability/harmonization between document format standards.

This is encouraging and should be a reminder to all that the Open XML standard will be controlled by the international community not by any commercial business or other organisation - including Microsoft.

While appeals against the standardisation of OOXML can be lodged during the next two months it seems obvious that a more productive activity for all now would be to participate in the work of SC34. This will be the real test of how committed to standards are those who have vociferously promulgated their concerns with OOXML for the past 2 years.
