Funding Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society

Microsoft Australia announced this week that it is to provide $400,000 to fund research at the University of Melbourne’s Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society (IBES), becoming a platinum sponsor of the Institute.

The contribution is being made under the IBES Industry Partner Program, that assists industry players with the aspects of network design and planning, product development and improvement that they need to deliver innovative, communications products and services.

It will be used to seed fund new research projects focusing on broadband applications that will be of benefit to health, education and community sectors. It will supplement the $2 million IBES receives from the Victorian State Government and additional support from the University of Melbourne.

Pip Marlow, managing director, Microsoft Australia, said: “Through organisations like IBES and the country’s significant investments in digital development, Australia has huge potential to become a global centre of excellence in broadband applications and online services.”

IBES director, laureate professor Rod Tucker said: "The support of Microsoft…enables researchers to engage with industry participants to collaborate and foster future broadband applications."
