ABS Report on Personal Fraud

On-line Fraud With more Australians than ever now engaged in commerce on-line it is inevitable that the e-security challenges witnessed overseas will be experienced in Australia. Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on June 27 highlight the fact that scams are prolific in both the real and virtual worlds.

The ABS found that more than 5.8 million Australians were exposed to a scam in the 12 months prior to their survey. This involved people receiving and viewing or reading an unsolicited invitation, request, notification or offer, designed to obtain their personal information or money or otherwise obtain a financial benefit by deceptive means.

If the number of attempts to scam worries you then you have to be horrified by the fact that 329,000 people became victims of those scams by responding through the supply of their personal information, money or both, or simply by them seeking more information.

According to the ABS 57,800 people were victims of a phishing or related scam.

In this age of digital networking, the ABS’s finding that 124,000 Australians in the past year had been victims of identity theft must surely give cause for political leaders to think even more carefully about how personal information is stored and accessed both in the public and commercial fields.
