Information Regarding the Latest Update for Windows 8.1

Microsoft has been listening to customer feedback. Much of this feedback has been received and some of the results are being given back to our users of Windows 8.1 in the form of updates. Recently, a very big update for Windows 8.1 was released. Read all about it here:

Since Microsoft wants to ensure that customers benefit from the best support and servicing experience and to coordinate and simplify servicing across both Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8.1 RT and Windows 8.1, this update will be considered a new servicing/support baseline. What this means is those users who have elected to install updates manually will have 30 days to install Windows 8.1 Update on Windows 8.1 devices; after this 30-day window - and beginning with the May Patch Tuesday, Windows 8.1 user's devices without the update installed will no longer receive security updates.
This means that Windows 8.1 users - starting patch Tuesday in May 2014 and beyond - will require this update to be installed. If the Windows 8.1 Update is not installed, those newer updates will be considered “not applicable.”

Windows Server 2012 R2 Update is now available to subscribers

For those users who are still using Windows 8 and Windows 2012 (and not Windows 8.1 and Windows 2012 R2) you are unaffected and will continue to receive updates as normal.
The new baseline only exists for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2.
Another important item for our enterprise users and IT pros out there: There is also an issue regarding Windows 8.1 Update preventing interaction with WSUS 3.2 over SSL connections. This has been outlined in the following blog post:

Microsoft plans to issue an update as soon as possible that will correct the issue and restore the proper behavior for Windows 8.1 Update KB 2919355 scanning against all supported WSUS configurations. Until that time, we are delaying the distribution of the Windows 8.1 Update KB 2919355 to WSUS servers.
You may still obtain the Windows 8.1 Update (KB 2919355) from the Windows Update Catalog or MSDN. However, we recommend that you suspend deployment of this update in your organization until we release the update that resolves this issue.
You may also find the workarounds discussed in this article to be useful for testing this Windows 8.1 Update for your organization. Thank you for your patience during this time.

I can't even install the update on my own machine (Dell) and companies have less than 1 month to patch all their machines even though WSUS currently isn't functioning?????

You can't just give us 30 days. That's not acceptable in any case, but now:
1. The update isn't installing correctly even on MS Surface Pro devices. There are many problems noted that are still not resolved.
2. The update isn't automatic, but must be manually run
3. Companies can't upgrade that fast. 1 month is just not acceptable. We can't even get paperwork approved in that time.
4. The term "Windows 8.1 Update" is confusing. People are confused as to what the difference is between "updating to Windows 8.1" and "Windows 8.1 Update". Should have named it Windows 8.2.
Please, for the love of silicon, give us more time to update! Give us 6 months at least. 1 month is not enough time and the update is causing problems even installing. - Anonymous

Why don't you name it Windows 8.1.1 or 8.2 or something that will be easier for ordinary people to understand? People ask me how come Microsoft will stop supporting their lastest OS so soon.They don't realize that Windows 8.1 update is an update to Windows 8.1 and not an update to Windows 8 so in order to get an update for Windows 8.1 update you have to stop using Windows 8.1 and update it because it won't be updated.This doesn't make sense to people. - Anonymous

Downloaded updates, installed, restarted, then I get the message "We couldn't complete the updates. Don't turn off your computer." This is the third time this has happened and it is very time consuming. I've wasted hours and hours trying to get this to work.
It won't install. Ironically enough, you state I have to get it to install by the 2nd Tuesday of next month or I will not be able to install other updates. This is a very troubling situation. How can I resolve the issue and get the updates installed so that I can then get more updates to install in the future without risking security problems? - Anonymous

We need an answer on this. The update doesn't work for many many people.
Something has gone badly wrong. How many hundreds of thousands of hours of productivity on planet earth have been flushed down the toilet.
I had become really happy with updates, now that slowly built confidence is in tatters.
We need an announcement, even if it is "don't install anything we'll let you on May Patch Tuesday".

Well, i saw this coming about ten years ago - M$ has reached the CRITICAL MASS - there are now not enough talented programmers left working there to actually collectively UNDERSTAND the multiple-million-lines-of-code leviathan that is "Windows". Those who haven't retired already have been gradually lured away to work for Google. And all that is left is a crowd of underachieving 20-somethings who only really had a vague idea of what under the hood, and never had the work ethic to get caught up. My daughter downloaded Windows 10 to her computer and it wasn't compatible, therefore as soon as she had it on her computer, it attack numerous areas and destroyed her computer!!I've also heard that Windows isn't making any more updates for Windows 8. I have an offline computer with windows 8.1 with bing, build 9600, that is in need of an offline update package
