Events This Week – July 6th, 2010

Hope all my U.S. readers had a great Independence Day weekend…I spent mine at a Washington Nationals game with my 7 year-old son (his first major-league game), followed by an evening of watching the town fireworks from the roof of our sunroom, then playing frisbee with a new light-up Aerobie disc we picked up over the weekend. Fun!

Here are the events listed in Community Megaphone for the next week (or so) for the Mid-Atlantic area, as well as webcasts of interest…this list includes events imported from the UGSS event calendar, and all events entered in Community Megaphone are also automatically synced to the UGSS event calendar:

  • CMAP Main Meeting - Real World Entity Framework - Dane Morgridge
Tuesday, July 06, 2010 6:30 PM, Columbia, MD
Most applications connect to a database at some point and ORM tools, like Entity Framework, can make that process a lot simpler. Whether you have worked with the Entity Framework before, sometimes it takes real world examples to make it all click. In this session we will look at a few real world examples using Entity Framework with technologies like ASP.Net MVC, Silverlight and WCF. We will look at some of the common issues when building applications with any ORM solution and how the new features in Entity Framework 4 help reduce development time and frustration. Most importantly, you will get to see how Entity Framework can be utilized in real applications along with some tips, tricks and gotchas.
Dane Morgridge has been a developer for 9+ years and has worked with .Net and C# since the first public beta. His current passions are Entity Framework, WPF, WCF, Silverlight and LINQ and is currently a Microsoft MVP for Data Platform Development. He works mostly with C#, but is also a big fan of whatever new technology he happens to come across. In addition to software development, he is the host of the Community Megaphone Podcast and also enjoys dabbling in graphic design, video special effects and hockey. When not with his family he is usually learning some new technology or working on some side projects. He is currently working as the Development Manager and Architect at Roska Digital in Montgomeryville, PA. He can be reached through is blog https://geekswithblogs.net/danemorgridge or on Twitter @danemorgridge.

  • Code Retreat Pittsburgh
Saturday, July 10, 2010 8:00 AM, Pittsburgh, PA
A code retreat is a day-long event that is focused on practicing the fundamentals of software development and learning from other attendees. Instead of focusing on the creation of a final project, attendees take turns pair-programming together in 45 minute iterations to try and implement Conway's Game Of Life. At the end of 45 minutes, the code is deleted, everyone reflects on what they learned, new pairs are created, and the cycle is repeated.
