The official Vista upgrade matrix
So this is purportedly the official upgrade grid for Windows Vista.
The cliffs for the article are that you will be good to go if you're running XP home, XP Pro would require a business or premium SKU of Windows, Media Center users can upgrade to ultimate or home premium, tablet PC users can go business or ultimate, and Windows 2000 and x64 users are going to be forced to clean install.
Good news for me since I plan to run Ultimate and I am currently running Windows Media Center edition...

I too plan to get the Ultimate version -- but with my experiences with previous versions of Windows, I'm still going to feel more comfortable doing a "clean" install as opposed to an upgrade to Vista. - Anonymous
