Here are the requirements for Windows Embedded 8.1:
If you clicked over to that link and came back, welcome back, the hardware requirements for Windows Embedded 8.1 is exactly the same as the hardware for Windows 8.1. Which is good. And bad. That might make it seem like it won’t work with small footprints. Now the difference between Windows 8.1 and Embedded Windows 8.1: You can create a smaller image by removing things or maybe using Windows Embedded which is slightly different O/S that allows you to make up your own O/S Architectures. But if you stick with Windows Embedded 8.1 Pro you can adapt for specific scenarios like POS, Kiosks, as well as others.
If you go commercial with your app, there might be some costs, but the costs can be negotiated or use one of the standard licensing. If you are student you get to use the Embedded 8 anyway you wish. And from the various news items, I have to conclude, but can not confirm that the price appears to have a movement downward in the pricing structure.
Where would you use Embedded Windows 8.1 Pro?
Use it in any intelligent system for industrial, POS, Digital Signage, Health Care and you could try it if you have an old Windows XP machine laying around that doesn’t really do much now that Microsoft has stopped supporting XP.

When I try the installer it said that it will expire in 365 days (1 year). Is that supposed to be? I would like to start to build a application, however I´m very sure that I need much more time for it. Learning at the same time I study how to build that is very time intensive. Other products from dreamspark doesn´t seam to have such a time expiration.Anonymous

Right, this keeps the zombies off of the offer. Think about it, there are a lot of people who download stuff, me included, and never use it. Just use it. If you need more time at the end of the year, let's work it out. Not like the Compact Framework isn't getting much competition from the Raspberry Pi and Linux.
