Information on OneNote Misplaced Sections
I saw someone ask about Misplaced Sections on the OneNote newsgroup so I thought I would blog about this.
- Misplaced Sections are created whenever OneNote could not sync some changes from the local cache to the master copy of the file. This might happen if you make some changes offline, then delete the master .one file and then come online; OneNote will move that section to the misplaced sections. You might also see this if you make changes to some notebook and while offline you try and close the notebook. OneNote will prompt you if you are sure you want to do this and if you choose to do so OneNote will create a Misplaced Sections virtual notebook and store the changed sections in there.
The main point here is that OneNote will not delete changes to your content, we want to be very conservative with your content and lose it. - Misplaced sections are only in the cache. These misplaced sections are not in the file system, you can only get to them from the cache and by running OneNote.
- They work like other sections so you can move them to other locations or deleted them; but they are read-only while they are in the Misplaced Sections notebook. If you have lots of misplaced sections and you want to quickly clear them out you can navigate to one of the sections and then choose File-->Delete all Misplaced Sections.
- If you reopen the notebook in question OneNote will attempt to patch up problems and move the misplaced sections out of that virtual notebook and move them to the master copy of the file. It works magically in certain cases, I was really impressed when I saw this working well.
If you have more questions please let me know and I will add to this. Ideally you should never see misplaced sections : )

matias - I am not sure I understand your problem. The hyperlink problem might be because we have our own protocol handler which is onenote:// and some applications might not understand that as well as http:// or ftp://. What application were you trying? Otherwise I don't understand the rest of your question. If you can give me more detail that would be great.Anonymous

The prompt you are seeing is because you are opening a section where OneNote doesn't think you have the notebook open. I would recommend that you open the section as one of your notebooks if possible. Otherwise there might be a bug and it is something we can look into in the future. I would log a bug on our Connect site: http://connect.microsoft.com/onenote Hope this helpsAnonymous

I'm having the same issue where all the sudden I have a misplaced sections notebook on my Galaxy Tab using OneNote Mobile full version. I cannot move, delete or otherwise modify the pages in any of the folders. I was able to recreate the pages in the correct notebooks but I can't delete the misplaced sections notebook or any of the folders or pages inside. I cleared the cache in the Android App Manager but they still show up. I hesitate to use the clear data option as I think that will delete everything. However, that may be OK as I assume I can resync with the correct notebooks on Skydrive? This may have all started when I repositioned a number of notebooks on my computer OneNote to put them in alphabetical order. It seems right after that is when the problem started. Suggestions?Anonymous

@Ivaylo - Sorry to hear this you should not be seeing new pages going to Misplaced Sections. Are you seeing this on Windows Phone or on Android? The only time you should see this is if you took notes offline but the section on the server was deleted by another person and then put those unsynced changes in Misplaced Sections.Anonymous

I've got this exact issue on my android. The OneNote app crashed and now I got this misplaced section that I can do absolutely nothing about, with notes that should actually be saved. There are pictures in the OneNote that I cannot get out now. I could retype the text, but I cannot retake the pictures. It's kinda stupid. Unless there's a solution I'd have to consider evernote again :-(Anonymous

I too have a "Misplaced Sections" for which I would like to get the data from on my Android phone. It tells that it is a Read-only section and does not allow me to do anything with it. This section does not appear in One Note on my desktop or on the web either. Please fix soon!Anonymous

I had lots of important notes in OneNote. I had just finished writing a few and then turned my internet on and clicked sync. It said something about it couldn't sync because some sections had been deleted or something but I hadn't deleted ANYTHING. The next thing I know a sign popped up saying something about sections being deleted and something mentioned about notes in the misplaced section, it had a button saying okay but I clicked the back button in panic thinking that I was going to lose everything and I lost it all anyway. I am so worries that's it's all permantly gone. I can't find the misplaced section anywhere and all my notes are gone! Please, can someone help? Is it possible that my notes are hidden away somewhere? I hadn't backed them up for agesAnonymous

Emily - Sorry to hear this. You should be able to find those notes by going to OneNote on your phone. Then just navigate upwards (the breadcrumb on the top of the screen with the names of your sections & notebooks). Then at the top of the app when you see the list of notebooks you should see one in there called "Misplaced Sections". If you go in there do you see your notes? From there you can mail them to yourself or copy & paste or take a screenshot. Does this help? I hope you can find them! Please let us knowAnonymous

I had some unsynced sections and I closed the main notebook where they came from. I saw them in the Misplaced Sections, but when I reopened up the main notebook (which was not complete because of those sections that wouldn't sync) the unsynced sections were gone, before I could copy them in! They did not sync into the reopened notebook, so where can I find them?Anonymous
