Novell Users International

Last night myself and Brett Roberts went along to the Novell Users International meeting (aka Novell User Group) in Wellington.

It was a great night. I nominated Brett to speak - he's spoken at Linux World in Australia, so he's a great candidate for it.  The slide deck was short (7 slides) and focused on giving the audience an overview of the agreement between Microsoft and Novell from Microsoft's perspective (which turns out to be very similar to the Novell perspective).

After the ten minute presentation we launched into a fantastic discussion about how the agreement affects patents (it doesn't - but it does mean that Microsoft and Novell wont be suing each other over patents).

We also had a lively discussion about document formats -  particularly around PDF and Word (as opposed to ODF and Open XML which is what we get more frequently now days).

All in all it was a great night.  Brett and I both really enjoyed the evening and John (who does a great job of helping to run the group) tells us he got good feedback.

All good!

If you have a user group that has a strong linux focus in New Zealand and you'd like to get a chance to argue talk to us contact me and we'll try and set it up.
