KB929390 - The SystemCenterDTSPackageTask scheduled task is not completed successfully on a computer that is running MOM 2005 Reporting

This KB article will be released shortly an available via https://support.microsoft.com/kb/929390

Symptoms Section

When the SystemCenterDTSPackageTask scheduled task runs on a computer that is running Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Reporting, the task is not completed successfully. In this scenario, the following event is logged in the Application log: Event Type: Error
Event Source: MOM.Datawarehousing.DTSPackageGenerator.exe
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001
Date: date
Time: time
User: N/A
Computer: ReportingServer
Description: An error occurred while generating the DTS package. Catastrophic failure

Cause Section

This problem occurs if one of the following System Center reporting files is corrupted:

  • SC_Inner_DTS_Package.DTS
  • SC_Inner_Temp_DTS_Package.DTS
  • SC_Outer_DTS_Packages.DTS

By default, these files are located in the %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft System Center Reporting\Reporting folder.

Resolution Section

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Back up and then remove the following three files from the %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft System Center Reporting\Reporting folder:
    • SC_Inner_DTS_Package.DTS
    • SC_Inner_Temp_DTS_Package.DTS
    • SC_Outer_DTS_Packages.DTS
  2. Run the SystemCenterDTSPackageTask scheduled task manually to determine whether the Data Transformation Services (DTS) job runs successfully. If the DTS job is completed successfully, the following event is logged in the Application log: Event Type: Information
    Event Source: DataTransformationServices
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 80
    Date: date
    Time: time
    User: N/A
    Computer: ReportingServer
Description: The execution of the following DTS Package succeeded:
Package Name: MOMDTSPackage_day of week, DATE
    Package Description: MOM DTS Package

MoreInformation Section

The three DTS package files that are mentioned in this article are created every time that the SystemCenterDTSPackageTask scheduled task runs. Also, these three files are deleted when this scheduled task finishes. If one of the DTS package files are corrupted, the DTS package is not generated when the SystemCenterDTSPackageTask scheduled task runs. Therefore, the DTS operation is unsuccessful.

The SystemCenterDTSPackageTask job is located under the Scheduled Tasks item in Control Panel. The executable path of this schedule task is set to the following path:

ExecutablePath=driveletter:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center Reporting\Reporting\MOM.Datawarehousing.DTSPackageGenerator.exe

To obtain the error information output directly from the MOM.Datawarehousing.DTSPackageGenerator.exe program, paste the DTS command-line information in a Command Prompt window. For example, follow these steps:

  1. Start a command prompt, and then change directory to the following location:

%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft System Center Reporting\Reporting

  1. Paste the following command into the Command Prompt window:

MOM.Datawarehousing.DTSPackageGenerator.exe /silent /srcserver: servername /srcdb:OnePoint /dwserver: servername /dwdb:SystemCenterReporting /product:"Microsoft Operations Manager"

Replace servername with the name of the computer that hosts the MOM 2005 database.

  1. Modify this command to remove the /silent parameter.
  2. Run the command.

If the DTS job fails, error information is generated at the command prompt. You can redirect this output to a text file to help troubleshoot the failure of the DTS job.
