LightSwitch Community & Content Rollup– May 2013 (+more)

Last year I started posting a rollup of interesting community happenings, content, samples and extensions popping up around Visual Studio LightSwitch . If you missed those rollups you can check them all out here: LightSwitch Community & Content Rollups .

WOW! Am I late on this rollup or what? Sorry folks but I have been travelling and speaking at conferences for the last three weeks. It’s great to be home and get back into my groove. Since we’re more than a third of the way into June I’ll throw in some of the key content & events that happened just last week --- like TechEd New Orleans! But first…

LightSwitch JavaScript Runtime Client Update 1

imageIn the beginning of May we released an update to our JavaScript runtime in order to support jQueryMobile 1.3. When we took a bet on jQuery, jQueryMobile, and datajs for our HTML client, we recognized that we’d need to adapt to the rapid release cadence these frameworks employ.  Our response is to start delivering a series of small, servicing releases for our HTML client runtime via NuGet that address known bugs and compatibility issues with emerging versions of jQuery, jQueryMobile, and datajs.

See this post on the LightSwitch team blog for information on how to update:

TechEd North America 2013

Last week I spoke at TechEd in New Orleans and delivered a couple LightSwitch sessions highlighting the HTML5 and SharePoint capabilities we added in Visual Studio 2012 Update 2 that was released in early April. The first session was so popular that I was asked to repeat it on the last day of the conference. That LightSwitch session also ranked in the top 10 developer sessions at TechEd! Thanks to all of you who attended – I think I must have spoke to about 400 people last week. Awesome.

Best thing about TechEd is all the content is available online for free! Check out the sessions here:

DevTeach 10 Year Anniversary

logoIn May I delivered an all-day LightSwitch training class and a couple sessions for DevTeach, a Canadian conference that I’ve been speaking at for 9 years now (even before I joined Microsoft). I was honored to be a part of the 10 year anniversary show in the greater Toronto area. Although DevTeach is a small conference, it always brings in good speakers and I can’t thank the organizer, Jean-René Roy (JR), enough for teaching me the real value of community. His selfless dedication to bringing developer training to Canada over the last decade has definitely inspired me. I feel a close connection to the Canadian developer community and I have made many friends over the years all because of DevTeach. I think D’Arcy Lussier said it best in his post Thoughts on 10 Years of DevTeach.

“The emergence and success of the Canadian Microsoft user group community over the last decade is due, in large part, to DevTeach.”

Thank you JR! Here’s to 10 more years!

When will we have a little attention on the lightswitch for silverlight?

Hi Robert, The Silverlight client is still supported in LS, there are still SL-only project templates you can choose. In fact, when we added SharePoint support, we also allow the Silverlight (in-browser) client to be deployed. When the team announced the HTML client last year we stated that it was a companion client to the Silverlight desktop client. See: blogs.msdn.com/.../announcing-the-lightswitch-html-client.aspx For an official statement on Silverlight please see: support.microsoft.com/.../lifean45

@goldy - Thanks! Great post. I added it to the list. @Marden - what kind of content are you specifically looking for? We have a ton of Silverlight content out there already so I think you're seeing more HTML content right now as people are figuring things out. The team is focusing here because new features need to be understood.

@Beth I'm not seeing any more functionality being added to silverlight client the impression I get is that silverlight was abandoned and all eyes were centered to HTML, I'm sad because I prefer to silverlight LOB applications than HTML, like to know about the plans for our dear silverlight client, we have several requests in user voice asking to improve performance, menus, etc ... for silverlight but nothing is answered. I already have applications lightswitch (silverlight client) consolidated, running on several customers, and I am very pleased with the result, but there is still much to improve our silverlight client, eg menus hierarchical, modular development, etc ... Today it is impossible to make applications in HTML client with the same quality and productivity silverlight client, please leave the situation clearer for silverlight client (support, implementations, road maps, etc. ..) We really liked it, so that it falls into oblivion. Thank you.

@Marden -- We definitely worked on perf in version 3. Are you still seeing issues here? Like I said, the HTML client is new and we have a lot of content already for Silverlight, so you will see newer content focus on HTML and SharePoint support.

I cannot understand why all of you at MS are not able or not willing to say us what's the future of LS with Silverlight?? if LS with silverlight ist dead and the future is HTML5 than say it - we developer need information to plan our investements! robert

@Marden @Robert -- Like I said above, we still support the Silverlight client. It is appropriate for heavy mouse & keyboard desktop scenarios. Our HTML client is targeted at mobile scenarios. It's probably hard to believe but we don't have unlimited resources here on the LS team. ;-) We prioritized building the HTML client and SharePoint support this release as this was the #1 need/ask of our customers. We do have bug fixes on our backlog so we will continue to incorporate them based on severity and resources. We did work heavily on perf in version 3 so if you are still seeing issues please let us know in the forums so we can troubleshoot. social.msdn.microsoft.com/.../threads Cheers, -Beth
