"Navigate to the webpage was canceled" error after installing MS09-002 (KB961260)

Hi everyone!

This is quick post but an important one.  The IE support team is seeing many issues coming in regarding this error when accessing secure web sites with Internet Explorer, after installing MS09-002.  I wanted to take some time and inform everyone that Microsoft “is” aware of this issue.  The behavior manifests by navigating from a site that is in a zone with protected mode on to a site in a zone with protected mode off (or vice versa) results in a navigation cancelled error (for example, going from a site in “trusted sites” to one in the Internet zone).

There should be a KB article available in the next few hours discussing how to mitigate this undesired behavior. Here’s a quick list:

  • Workaround #1
As the problem occurs when transitioning from a site in the Internet Zone to a site in the Trusted Sites Zone
One workaround is to place both sites into the Internet Zone. Then restart the IE7 browser.
This ensures that "Protected Mode" is enabled by default for both sites and does not get toggled.

  •

  • Workaround #2
As the problem occurs when transitioning from a site in the Internet Zone to a Site in the Trusted Sites Zone
Another workaround is to place both sites into the Trusted Sites Zone.

  • NOTE: In some scenarios, your browser may be redirected to other sites or I-frames before finally logging into the final authenticated site. So it is recommended to add the whole domain (FQDN) of both sites to the Trusted sites zone.

  • For example:

  • If your Internet Zone login page is:  https://www.SiteA.com
And your Trusted authenticated site is:  https://www.SiteB.com,
You will want to add *.SiteA.com and *.SiteB.com to the  Trusted Sites Zone. Then restart the IE7 browser.
This ensures that the "Protected Mode" status does not get toggled.

  •

  • Workaround #3
If the “Protected Mode” checkbox is set for both Internet and Trusted Sites Zones - then there is no problem
If the “Protected Mode” checkbox is cleared in both Internet and Trusted Sites Zones - then there is no problem
If the internet banking URL is not added to the Trusted Sites list - then there is no problem (since the checkbox status does not change in a single zone).

To set or clear the “Protected Mode” checkbox in IE7:

1. Open IE7's "Internet Options"
2. Click the "Security" Tab
3. Click to highlight the Internet Zone
4. Set or clear the checkbox for:
Enable Protected Mode (requires restarting Internet Explorer)

We will keep you informed with any further developments!

Regards,

The IE Support Team

jd -The update can un-installed.  However, if you do then you will not be as secure as you could be.  My suggestion is that you read the KB article (967941) and details posted about MS09-002 on this blog and use one of the work-arounds suggested.Regards,The IE Support Team
