Today’s blog is going to cover some issues regarding the installation of MS12-034 (2686509). When installing this update you may encounter the following error message:

Setup cannot continue because one or more prerequisites required to install KB2686509 failed (0x8007F0F4)

The existence of %windir%FaultyKeyboard.log indicates that we found a keyboard layout registered on the computer but the files do not exist in the %Windir%System32 folder. 

If you encounter the error and a FaultyKeyboard.log is not created there is some other possible causes and solutions. The following KB article is being updated on regular basis to list out possible solutions so you should always check it for updated information MS12-034: Description of the security update for CVE-2012-0181 in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003: May 8, 2012

    I have about 9 still open support cases where the current status is "Subject:Case is under discussion with TM and TSL"That KB is still confusing.In cases where people remapped a key there IS NO faultykeyboard.log file.social.technet.microsoft.com/.../10829.kb2686509-failure-due-to-remapping-of-a-key.aspxOther failures include when people have upgraded from Windows 98/ME.  I also am tracking an issue where people are on a Mac with Bootcamp and XP's updating is barfing.social.technet.microsoft.com/.../10876.kb2686509-failure-due-to-upgrade-from-windows-me-or-98-to-windows-xp.aspxsocial.technet.microsoft.com/.../10880.kb2686509-failure-due-to-missing-dll-files.aspxSusan Bradleysusan(@)msmvps.com

    Mine failed but it was because I had modified the keyboard layout [disabled the caps lock as I kept on hitting it by mistaked]. As soon as I reset the layout [with the utility], it installed fine.

    Mine just fails, no 0x... message or anything.  I have no idea where to start.

    The recent fixit release isn't any help as it fail. The message has no error number, code, or status indicating why just some generic wording.

    Same here. No error number - nothing. Just "failed".Tried the installer - get prerequisites message. Don't have time for this!!Glad we're looking at another OS!!  (We're not doing Windows 8 - will encourage too many employees to play on gadgets rather than work.)

    Ran into this with a Window XP Pro configured as a Kiosk. We had modified the "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlKeyboard Layout" key years ago to remove access to specific keys by the end-user.
