Change resource settings for a device

To change resource settings for a device

Open Device Manager.
Double-click the type of device you want to change.
Double-click the specific device you want to change. If the device has resources settings that you can change, the Resources tab will appear in the dialog box.
Click the Resources tab, and then clear the Use automatic settings check box. This check box might be unavailable if you cannot assign a specific resource to the device.
In Setting based on, click the hardware configuration you want to change.
In Resource settings, under Resource type, click the resource type you want to change. Your choices are as follows:
- Direct memory access (DMA)
- Interrupt request (IRQ)
- Input/output (I/O) port
- Memory address
Click Change Setting, and then type a new value for the resource type.
Repeat as necessary.

Caution

Changing resource settings improperly can disable your hardware and cause your computer to malfunction or become inoperable. Resource settings should be changed only by users who have expert knowledge of computer hardware and hardware configuration settings.

Important

You must be certain that the new values you apply do not conflict with any other devices. If you have any device conflicts, they appear under Conflicting device list.

Use automatic settings is unavailable for devices that have no other settings to configure. It is also unavailable on devices that are controlled by Plug and Play resources and should not be changed by the user.

Notes

To perform this procedure, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure.
To open Device Manager, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management, and then click Device Manager.
You should need to assign resources manually only for some older Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) and Plug and Play basic input/output system (BIOS) devices. It is not usually necessary for you to change resource settings because resources are automatically allocated by the system when the hardware is installed.
