Create Disk From VHD

The Create Disk from VHD activity is used to create a new disk from a VHD and add the disk to an existing virtual machine.

For the procedure to configure this activity, see Configuring the Create Disk from VHD Activity.

The following tables list the properties and published data for this activity. The activity publishes all of the data from the required and optional properties into published data.

Create Disk from VHD Properties

Element Description

Bus

The IDE or SCSI bus to which to attach the disk. If you select <Auto>, the first available value will be selected.

Bus Type

IDE or SCSI

File Name

The name of the VHD on which the new disk will be based. If you select <Auto>, the name will be generated based on the name of the virtual machine to which the disk will be added together with a unique identifier.

Logical Unit Number (LUN)

The logical unit number (LUN) for the VHD object on an IDE or SCSI bus. If you select <Auto>, the first available value will be selected.

Virtual Hard Disk Path

The location of the VHD used to create the disk

VM ID

The unique identifier (GUID) of the virtual machine to which the disk will be added

True or False. If True, the virtual machine is started from the disk.

System Volume

True or False. If True, the disk contains the operating system for the virtual machine.

The unique identifier (GUID) of the virtual disk drive

Virtual Disk Drive Name

The name of the virtual disk drive

Virtual Hard Disk Path

The location of the VHD used to create the disk

VM ID

The unique identifier (GUID) of the virtual machine for which the disk was created

Configuring the Create Disk from VHD Activity

To configure the Create Disk from VHD activity

  1. From the Activities window, drag a Create Disk from VHD activity to the active runbook window. Double-click the Create Disk from VHD activity icon.

  2. Click the Properties tab.

  3. In the Configuration section, click the ellipsis button (...), and select the Name of the Virtual Machine Manager computer that you want to connect to with this activity. Click OK. The properties required to define this activity are displayed in the Properties section.

  4. In the Properties section, assign a value to each of the required properties. If applicable, to automatically populate the value from the data published by any previous activity in the workflow, right-click the property box, point to Subscribe, and then click Published data. Click the published data element you want to use, and then click OK. To view additional elements, select Show Common Published Data.

  5. To use additional properties, click Optional Properties. In the Add/Remove Property dialog box, select the properties you want to apply to this activity from the Available list, and then click the right arrow button (>>). The properties appear in the Selected list. To remove a property from the Selected list, click the property, and then click the left arrow button (<<). Click OK. Assign values to the properties or Subscribe to Published data from the previous activity in the workflow, and then click OK.

  7. Click Finish.
