Today, Microsoft SQL Server 2014 for Embedded Systems, which is binary identical to Microsoft SQL Server 2014, becomes generally available.
We think this product provides the most comprehensive database platform for building purpose-built, next-generation, industry-class server appliances. With this edition, enterprises and OEMs now have a lot more capabilities and a host of improvements they can leverage to enhance performance, increase security and build more cloud-ready solutions.
For one thing, we’ve substantially improved the product’s performance, with new and improved features such as In-Memory OLTP* and AlwaysOn High availability.* This is good news for OEMs in particular, who can leverage these performance and high- reliability capabilities in industry devices scenarios, such as in industrial automation devices that run critical workloads and enable instant access to information.
For example, in one retail scenario with Edgenet, there was a 7x performance improvement with the use of the In-Memory feature that helped an online retailer to provide real-time inventory updates, resulting in increased sales via greater throughput and improved customer satisfaction. The high availability improvements and AlwaysOn feature provide the 9’s necessary for mission-critical workloads mandated in certain industries such as telecom; it’s also easier to deploy and manage, reducing maintenance costs.
While business analytics are largely used in the back-end systems driving the analytics, business optimization can happen at the point of impact in the edge location, thus expanding decision-making power throughout your infrastructure. With server appliances built using Windows Server 2012 R2 for Embedded Systems and Microsoft SQL Server 2014 for Embedded Systems, enterprises can fully meet their server needs within the industrial infrastructure, taking advantage of pre-configured and better scalability while connecting seamlessly with their IT infrastructure, whether it’s on- premise or in the cloud.
