New Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 CTPs

Some of you may be aware that the new February 2005 Community Technology Previews for both Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition and SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition are now available to MSDN Professional, Enterprise, and Universal Subscribers from MSDN Subscriber Downloads.

These latest Community Technology Previews were posted early Friday morning and are already receiving significant download interest.  Why all the interest?

Well, the Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition CTP offers a peek inside of one of Microsoft’s newest development tools.  The Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition expands upon the planned features of the Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition to include tools for remote server development and debugging and SQL Server 2005 development, among others.

And if that’s not enough to pique your interest, see the new SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition CTPs.  New features include 64-bit support for SQL Server Reporting Services and SQL Server Notification Services, upgrade support from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005, and new SQL Server Reporting Services features.

What’s more, the SQL Server 2005 team also released CTPs for two other SQL Server 2005 products, the Express Edition and Express Manager.

To access these new downloads, just click on the .NET Passport Sign In button above.  Once authenticated, you can find the new Visual Studio CTP under Developer Tools | Visual Studio 2005 and the SQL Server CTPs under Servers | SQL Server | SQL Server 2005.

If you haven’t downloaded them yet, Seth says check ‘em out.

Regards,

Seth Adams

Downloaded and installed (well VS2005 at least), and reported my first bug (for this version).

However, no sign of them in the downloads RSS feed (http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/rss.xml).

    Dear Mr. Thorp,

It appears that you may have tried to access the downloads through the MSDN Download and Code Center site located at http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/.

The Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 CTPs are only available to active Professional, Enterprise, and Universal MSDN Subscribers through the MSDN Subscriber Downloads Web site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/)

    We apologize for any confusion.

    Regards,
    Seth Adams

So, does CTP play nice beside VS2003, or should does it absolutely require a totally different machine to install it on?

For technical questions and discussion on the new Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 CTPs, please visit the MSDN Developer Centers for each product.

    - For Visual Studio, see http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/.
    - For SQL Server, see http://msdn.microsoft.com/SQL/2005/.

Also, to address an earlier question, MSDN Subscriptions will not be shipping either of these CTPs as part of our media shipments, but we will be shipping Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 once released.

Where can I find the release planning ?

When is Beta 2 (with "Go Live" License) released AND when is VS 2005 released ??

We want to convert our VB6 project.
But we don't want to use VS2003, because of missing the "edit and continue" .

    Regards,
    Michael

With respect to release timing, I regret that I'm unable to offer specifics. However, a quick MSN Search of "Visual Studio Beta 2" yields several articles that may be of interest.

My understanding is that the Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 will be publically available to order at a nominal cost with delivery beginning 4-6 weeks after launch.

To automatically be among the first to receive Beta 2 and Visual Studio 2005 once released, an MSDN Professional, Enterprise, or Universal subscription offers a compelling alternative. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/howtobuy/ for additional information.

"Also, to address an earlier question, MSDN Subscriptions will not be shipping either of these CTPs as part of our media shipments".

This begs the question why not?

Please confirm that you’re logged into the MSDN Subscriber Downloads site at http://msdn.microsoft.com/subscriptions/.

Once your Passport is authenticated and the Table of Contents appears, you should be able to find the Visual Studio 2005 February CTP under Developer Tools | Visual Studio 2005 | Visual Studio 2005 Community Technology Preview DVD Builds. It’s the third item: Visual Studio 2005 February CTP – Professional Edition (English).

Will there still be a low cost upgrade available to existing users like there was for vb6 , vs2002, & vs2003 ?

    Thanks,
I already have VS 2005 beta 1 installed and when I tried to install SQL Server 2005 beta 2 I get an error.
.

Probably it doesn't like the slightly outdated CLR which shipped with VS beta 1.

    Probable solution:

    1. Deinstall VS 2005 beta 1
    2. Install SS 2005 beta 2
    3. Install VS 2005 beta 1

    All should be fine.

When comparing the SQL 2005 versions (http://www.microsoft.com/sql/2005/productinfo/sql2005features.asp) there is no mention of the Developer Edition. How does it fit in with the other 4 versions?
  • Anonymous

The Developer Edition has same feature set as the Enterprise Edition, but with limited licensing for development and testing purposes only.

With regard to the availability of low cost upgrades to Visual Studio 2005, final details are not yet known. However, from an MSDN Subscriptions standpoint, only active and expiring MSDN subscribers will be eligible for renewal pricing to the new Visual Studio Team System Subscriptions.

Current licensees of any Microsoft Visual tool v. 5.0 and later may wish to consider upgrading to an MSDN Professional, Enterprise, or Universal level subscription to avail themselves of current upgrade pricing and terms.
