Repair the Move Exchange Server Data task

Problem   The task to Move Exchange Server Data is not working. This problem may occur if the server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard had a power outage or a system failure during the Move Exchange Server Data task.

Initially, there may be no indication that there is a problem. The server that is running Windows SBS 2011 Standard may start normally, you may be able to create a new user account without any errors or warnings, and the user may have access to email. However, when you attempt to complete the Move Exchange Server Data task, the task fails. This could be because the Exchange Server data exists in two locations. You can move data only if all of the storage groups exist on the same drive. If a user manually moves one of the storage groups to another location, or if the task to Move Exchange Server Data fails, it is possible that one storage groups exists on one drive and another group exists on a different drive.

Solution   Verify that the Exchange Server data exists in two locations, and then move all of the data to one location.

To verify that the Exchange Server data exists in two locations

  1. From the Windows SBS 2011 Standard Console, click Backup and Server Storage, and then click Server Storage.

  2. Click each drive that is listed and review the Used Space list to see if Exchange Server Data is listed more than once. If you see data located in more than one location, continue with the following procedure.

To move all of the data to one location

  1. To open the Exchange Management Console, click Start, click All Programs, expand Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, right-click Exchange Management Console, and then click Run as administrator.

  2. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  3. In the console tree, navigate to Organization Configuration, then click Mailbox.

  4. In the result pane, click the Database Management tab.

  5. Right-click the database for which you want to change the path, and then click Move Database Path.

  6. In the Move Database Path Wizard, under Database paths, click Move to move the database path to a new location. You can change the location for the database file path by editing the Database file path field. You can change the location for the log folder path by editing the Log folder path text field.

  7. The wizard moves the database file path and the log folder path to the new location. Click Back to make configuration changes.

  8. On the Completion page, confirm whether the move process completed successfully. A status of Completed indicates that the wizard completed the task successfully. A status of Failed indicates that the task was not completed. If the task fails, review the summary for an explanation, and then click Back to make any configuration changes.

  9. Click Finish to complete the Move Database Path Wizard.

  10. Repeat steps 5-9 for all mailbox databases, and then close the Exchange Management Console.
