Install, configure, and send faxes in Windows Vista

The Windows Fax and Scan component is not installed or configured in Windows Vista. In order to send faxes from a client computer that is running Windows Vista, you must manually install and configure Windows Fax and Scan.

To install the Windows Fax and Scan component

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Programs.

  2. Click Programs and Features, and then click Turn Windows features on or off.

  3. On the User Account Control page, click Continue.

  4. In the Windows Features dialog box, select the Windows Fax and Scan check box, and then click OK.

To configure the Windows Fax and Scan component

  1. Click Start, click All Programs, and then click Windows Fax and Scan.

  2. Click Tools, and then click Fax Accounts.

  3. Click Add, and then click Connect to a fax server on my network.

  4. On the Type the fax server location page, type the printer name \\%ServerName%, where ServerName is the name of your server that is running Windows SBS 2008.

  5. On the Windows Security Alert dialog box, click Unblock.

  6. On the Windows Firewall Settings page, click Exceptions, select the Microsoft Windows Fax and Scan check box, and then click Apply.

  7. On the Choose a fax server name page, type a name for the fax server, select Use by default for sending faxes, and then click Done.

To send faxes

  1. Click Start, click All Programs, and then right-click Windows Fax and Scan.

  2. Click New fax, and then follow the instructions to finish the wizard.
