Install, configure, and send faxes in Windows XP

The Windows Fax and Scan component is not installed or configured in Windows XP. In order to send faxes from a client computer that is running Windows XP, you must manually install and configure Windows Fax and Scan.

To install the Windows Fax and Scan component

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.

  2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.

  3. In the Windows Components Wizard, select the Fax Services check box, and then click Next. You are prompted to insert your CD for Windows XP.

  4. Insert the CD, browse to the appropriate installation path (usually the default path), and then click OK.

To configure the Windows Fax and Scan component

  1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.

  2. Click Add a printer. The Add Printer Wizard opens.

  3. Click Next.

  4. On the Local or Network Printer page, select A network printer or a printer attached to another computer, and then click Next.

  5. On the Specify a Printer page, select Connect to this printer, and then type the printer name \\%ServerName%\fax, where ServerName is the name of your server that is running Windows SBS 2008.

  6. Click Next to finish the wizard.

To send faxes

  1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.

  2. The printer name, fax on %ServerName%, where ServerName is the name of your server that is running Windows SBS 2008, is shown. Double-click the icon for this printer.

  3. In the Fax Console, click Send a Fax. A list of fax printers is displayed.

  4. Click fax on %ServerName%.

  5. Follow the instructions to finish the wizard.
