When to Run the Fix My Network Wizard

Applies To: Windows SBS 2008

The following table contains a list of issues that the Fix My Network Wizard can check for and fix. The list is not exhaustive, and there are many more issues that the wizard can fix. It is recommended that you run the Fix My Network Wizard before you perform other troubleshooting steps if you have issues on your network. Occasionally you may need to run the Fix My Network Wizard two or three times to fix all the issues.

When to Run the Fix My Network Wizard What the Fix My Network Wizard Checks and Fixes

DHCP is not functioning correctly

  • Is the DHCP Server service started?

  • Is the DHCP scope missing or incorrect?

  • Is the DHCP IP exclusion range correct?

  • Is the DHCP Server service is installed?

    You must reinstall the DHCP Server service.

  • Is the DHCP Server service set to Automatic?

  • Are the DHCP authorization and binding correct?

DNS is not functioning correctly

  • Is the DNS Server service installed?

    You must reinstall the DNS Server service.

  • Is the DNS Server service set to Automatic?

  • Is the DNS Server service started?

  • Is the DNS Server service configured correctly?

  • Do the A and AAAA records exist for the server, and are they accurate?

  • Does the CompanyWeb CNAME record exist?

  • Does the CNAME record for the site exist?

  • Are the extension mechanisms for DNS (EDNS) disabled?

  • Is the reverse DNS zone configured correctly?

  • Is the forward DNS zone configured correctly?

  • Is the forward DNS zone for the company domain found (if there is a public FQDN)?

  • Is the forward DNS zone missing a record?

    You must manually create the missing forward DNS zone record.

  • Are DNS forwarders being used instead of Root Hint? (If so, the wizard warns you, but it does not fix the problem automatically.)

Users cannot log on to Windows SBS 2008

  • Is the network adapter configured correctly?

  • Is the primary network adapter new or missing?

  • Is there more than one static IP address on the network adapter?

    Note

    Windows SBS 2008 does not support multiple IP addresses on a network adapter. You are warned, and then the additional IP address is removed.

  • Are there duplicate IP addresses on the network?

  • Is more than one gateway configured on the network adapter?

    Note

    Windows SBS 2008 does not support network address translation (NAT). Network adapters with more than one gateway are automatically disabled.

  • Are there multiple network adapters on the server?

    Note

    Windows SBS 2008 does not support multiple network adapters on a server. You are warned, and then the additional network adapter is disabled.

Local or remote users cannot access the Windows SBS 2008 network

  • Is the self-signed certificate still valid?

  • Does Internet Information Services (IIS) have a certificate that is bound to it?

    • If a valid trusted certificate exists, the wizard binds the certificate to IIS.

    • If a valid trusted certificate does not exist, the wizard binds the self-signed certificate to IIS.

    • If the trusted certificate is expired, the wizard warns you that it is expired and needs to be renewed, replaces the certificate with the self-signed certificate, and then binds the certificate to IIS.

    • If the self-signed certificate is expired, the wizard issues a new certificate, and then binds the certificate to IIS.

    • If the trusted certificate or the self-signed certificate is updated or changed, the wizard rebuilds the Certificate Installation Package, and then it warns that the certificate must be redistributed to people who have remote computers or remote devices.

  • Is the certificate authority service installed?

  • Is the certificate authority service set to Automatic?

  • Is the certificate authority service configured correctly?

Windows SBS 2008 cannot find the Internet

  • Has the router changed?

    Note

    You must re-run the Connect to the Internet Wizard to find the new router.

  • Is the router available?

    Note

    The wizard requests that you reboot the router. If that does not work, contact your ISP.

  • Are the port mappings set up correctly?

    Note

    If the router is not an UPnP™ certified device, you receive an error message telling you to manually verify router port mappings.

There are issues with the external domain or the domain name

  • Is the external DNS configured correctly?

  • Is the external domain configured?

    Note

    The wizard warns you to run the Internet Address Management Wizard.

  • Are the domain provider credentials correct?

    Note

    The wizard warns you to check the domain provider credentials.

There are problems with e-mail

  • Is the primary SMTP address the same as the server FQDN?

  • Is there a valid outbound SMTP IP address?

    Note

    The wizard warns that you must fix the outbound SMTP IP address.

  • Are the outbound SMTP credentials correct?

    Note

    The wizard warns you to check the outbound SMTP credentials.

Users cannot access their e-mail on the internal Web site

  • Is the foreign gateway connector to the internal Web site installed and pointing to the e-mail drop directory?

  • Is e-mail enabled on the internal Web site?

Remote users cannot access Remote Web Workplace

  • Are the Terminal Service Proxy and Terminal Gateway settings correct?

  • Is RPC over HTTP enabled?

Remote users cannot access the network through the VPN

  • Does a VPN security group exist?

  • Is the Routing and Remote Access service installed?

  • Is the Routing and Remote Access service set to Automatic?

  • If the VPN was enabled by running the VPN Wizard, is the Routing and Remote Access service started?

    Note

    If the VPN Wizard did not enable the Routing and Remote Access service, take no action.

  • Are the Network Policy settings correct?

  • Are the Windows Firewall port mappings valid?

  • Are the port mappings on the router valid?

  • Is the VPN authentication method set correctly in the registry?
