To connect to the Internet by using a modem

Install the modem hardware on your computer.
Add the modem to your computer. In Control Panel, double-click Phone and Modem Options.
If you are prompted to provide location information, do so and then click OK.
On the Modems tab, click Add. Follow the steps in the Add Hardware Wizard.
After the modem is added, verify that the modem appears as a port under Ports in Routing and Remote Access.
To configure the modem port, right-click Ports, and then click Properties.
In the Port Properties dialog box, select the modem you want to configure, click Configure, select the Demand-dial routing connections (inbound and outbound) check box, and then click OK.
To create a demand-dial interface and configure it to use the modem to dial in to the ISP, right-click Network Interfaces, and then click New Demand-dial interface.
Add a default network route that uses the newly created demand-dial interface.

Note

A default network route has a Destination of 0.0.0.0, a Network mask of 0.0.0.0, and a Metric of 1. Because the dial-up connection to the ISP is a point-to-point link, the Gateway IP address is not configurable.
