All Nodes in Heat Map View Appear Grey

Updated: May 2011

Applies To: Windows HPC Server 2008, Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

When you open the Heat Map view in HPC Cluster Manager, all the nodes appear grey, and the metric values all appear as 0.00.

An unresponsive Heat Map is illustrated by the following screen capture:

Cause

The HPC Management Service on each compute node sends counter data to the HPC System Definition Model (SDM) Store Service on the head node via UDP packets on port 9893. HPC Cluster Manager queries the HPC SDM Service for current counter data to display in the Heat Map.

Resolution

To restore Heat Map functionality, restart the HPC Management Service and the HPC SDM Store Service on the head node and restart HPC Cluster Manager.

To restart services on the head node

  1. Close all instances of HPC Cluster Manager.

  2. Open the Services snap-in on the head node. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

  3. Right-click HPC SDM Store Service, then click Restart. Restarting the HPC SDM Store Service also restarts the HPC Management Service.

  4. Close the Services snap-in.

Note
You can also stop and restart the HPC Management Service and the HPC SDM Store Service in an elevated Command Prompt window by running the following commands: net stop hpcmanagement net stop hpcsdm net start hpcmanagement net start hpcsdm

Verification

Open a new instance of HPC Cluster Manager, then verify that the Heat Map is reflecting counter data again.
