INF File Size and Modem Response Codes

The size of an INF file is limited by the available disk space for computers running Microsoft Windows 2000 and later versions of the operating system.

In addition, modem INF files that are specific to Windows 2000 or later versions of the operating system can benefit from improved connection times by reducing the number of registry entries called Responses entries. These entries are used by Unimodem to interpret modem responses.

There are several strategies you can use to minimize the size of your INF files:

  • Minimize extraneous INF comments.

  • Eliminate Responses entries for responses that your modem is unlikely to make. For example, if your modem supports 56 Kbps but the firmware supports up to 60 Kbps, you can eliminate the Responses entries for the 60 Kbps speed because the modem will rarely report responses that high.

  • Reduce the connection Responses entries to just the verbose set of "CONNECT" and the DCE rate. Remove extra Responses entries for error correction or data compression messages.

Note   Modify the Init entry so that the modem returns only the "CONNECT " and DCE rate messages.
