Creating Log Analysis Tools

You can use the WMS Client Logging plug-in included with Windows Media Services to log client data, or you can create your own. Logging plug-ins are event notification plug-ins that handle event notices raised by the server when the server logs client activity. A client can be a Windows Media Player, a distribution server, or a cache proxy server, and Windows Media Services supports both client and server logs. The server logs information in an internal buffer that contains both a W3C-compliant, space-delimited string and XML tag-delimited data. You can access the log information by using the W3C string or the XML data. You can then create tools that automatically analyze the log data. For example, you can filter out the advertisement data to determine how many times and ad was played. For more information about logging plug-ins, see the following sections:
