How to Create a Buy N, Get 1 Free Discount

Use the Create New Discount Wizard to create a "Buy 1, Get 1 Free" discount. This discount lets you offer a free gift to your customers with a minimum-quantity purchase. For example, customers can buy two shirts and receive a tie as a free gift.

To start the Create New Discount Wizard

  1. To open the Commerce Server Marketing Manager, click Start, point to Microsoft Commerce Server 2007 , and then click Marketing Manager.

  2. In Commerce Server Marketing Manager, from the Views pane, click Campaigns.

  3. In the Tree View pane, click All Discounts.

    Note

    If you cannot see the Tree View pane, click Tree View on the toolbar.

  4. In the Tasks pane, click Create new discount.

  5. On the Welcome to the New Discount Wizard page, click Next.

To select the customer

  1. On the Select Customer page, in the Customer box, from the drop-down list, select the customer for whom you want to create the discount.

    If you have not previously added a customer, Commerce Server provides a default customer you can use to create the discount.

  2. Click Next.

To select the campaign

  1. On the Select Campaign page, in the Campaign box, from the drop-down list, select the campaign for which you want to create the discount.

  2. Click Next.

To specify the discount properties

  1. On the Discount Properties page, do the following:

    Discount Name

    Type the name for the discount.

    Start Date

    Type or select the discount start date and time from the drop-down calendar. Date and time are in local time.

    End Date

    Type or select the discount end date and time from the drop-down calendar. Date and time are in local time.

    Basket Display

    Type the text for each language in which you display the discount.

    The basket display explains the discount to the customer. For example, you may have a basket display such as "Congratulations! You have received the back-to-school discount!"

    Comments

    Type any comments that are pertinent to this discount.

  2. Click Next.

To specify the discount type

  1. On the Discount Type page, do the following:

    Select Buy N, Get 1 Free Type from the drop-down list.

    Description

    This box displays a description and an example for the selected discount type.

    You cannot edit this box.

    Display Type

    Select the type of display you want from the drop-down list.

    The following options are available.

    • Image. Linked to the designated Web pages where the discount is scheduled to appear. Customers see the image when they visit the Web pages where you display the discount.

    • Text. Composed of text only. Customers see the text when they visit the Web pages where you display the discount.

    • HTML. Composed of HTML code. Customers see the resulting text when they visit the Web pages where you display the discount.

    • Non-Clickable Image. Graphical image that customers see when they visit the Web pages where you schedule the discount to appear. The discount is not linked to a Web page.

    • Buy Now. Enables customers to purchase goods from any Web page on the Internet. When a customer clicks a product image, a dialog box appears that prompts the customer for shipping address and credit card information.

    • Windows Media Services. Displays high-quality audio and video advertisements.

    • Left Vignette. Composed of text that you display to the left of the image where you display the discount.

    • Right Vignette. Composed of text that you display to the right of the image where you display the discount.

  2. Click Next.

To select the product or product category to which this discount applies

  1. On the Qualifying Products page, do the following:

    Select one of the following options to apply the discount to:

    • Any Products

    • Product

    • Category

    If you select Product or Category, click Browse to open the Product Picker dialog box. You use the Product Pickerdialog box to select a single product or product category to which you want to apply the discount.

    Quantity

    Type the minimum quantity of merchandise that the customer must purchase to qualify for the discount.

  2. Click Next.

To search for the product or product category to which this discount applies

  1. If you selected a Product or Category to apply this discount to, in the Product Picker dialog box, on the Search tab, do the following:

    Select the catalog to search from the drop-down list.

    Look for

    Select the value that you want to search for. You can search for products, categories, or products and categories.

    Keyword

    Type the word or phrase on which you want to search, for example "tents".

  2. Click Find.

  3. In the Results pane, select the item to which you want to apply the discount, and then click OK. This returns you to the Qualifying Products page. The item you selected appears in the second Products box on the page.

  4. On the Qualifying Products page, click Next.

To specify the basket and award limits

  1. On the Order Limit page, do the following:

    Type the discount limit or select a discount limit from the drop-down list for the number of times to apply this discount to the basket.

    <unlimited> applies the discount an unlimited number of times, assuming the condition for the discount is met multiple times in the basket.

    If you want to specify a limit on the number of times to apply this discount across multiple baskets, contact your site developer.

    Award Limit

    Type the discount limit or select a discount limit from the drop-down list for the number of times to apply this discount to the basket.

    <unlimited> applies the discount an unlimited number of times, assuming the condition for the discount is met multiple times in the basket.

  2. Click Next.

To specify the discount eligibility requirements

  1. On the Eligibility Requirements page, do the following:

    Note

    The Marketing Manager user interface does not support the use of discount eligibility requirements to target discounts for display. If you want to use the eligibility requirements to target discounts, see your site developer.

    Use this

    Global Expression

    Select the expression or expressions that qualify for the discount from the list of available expressions, or click Add to open the Choose Expressions dialog box. Choose a global expression to use for this discount. For example, you can select target expressions that you have created to target the users or user groups that will receive the discount.

    The expression you select can be shared by other discounts.

    Click OK to return to the Eligibility Requirements page.

    Local Expression

    Select the expression(s) that qualify for the discount from the list of available expressions, or click Add to open the Expression Builder. Use the Expression Builder to create a new expression to qualify for the discount.

    For example, you can select target expressions that you have created to target the users or user groups that will receive the discount.

    The expression you create is specific to this discount. The expression cannot be shared by other discounts.

    Click OK to return to the Eligibility Requirements page.

  2. Click Next.

To specify the display type properties

  1. On the Display TypeProperties page, depending on the Display Type you selected, do the following:

    Exposure Limit

    From the drop-down list, select the number of times to show the discount to a customer in a session.

    The maximum number of times the discount can be shown to a customer is ten times within one session.

    Display Size

    Select the size of the discount display from the drop-down list. The options available are:

    • Full Banner

    • Full Banner with Nav Bar

    • Link Exchange

    • Half Banner

    • Square Button

    • Button #1

    • Button #2

    • Micro Button

    • Vertical Banner

    HTML Text

    Type the text for the discount in HTML format.

    Alt Text

    Type the alternate text that customers see when graphics are not enabled on their computers.

    Image URL

    Type the URL to which the discount image links.

    Click URL

    Type the location of the discount image.

    Window Height

    Type the window height for the discount.

    Window Width

    Type the window width for the discount.

    Text

    Type the text for the discount.

    Windows Media Services ASF

    Type the Windows Media Services Advanced Streaming Format (ASF) for the discount.

  2. Click Preview to preview the discount in a Web browser window.

  3. Close the Web browser window.

  4. Click Next.

To review the discount property values

  1. On the Discount Summary page, review the discount property values. To make changes, click Back. To accept the property values and create the discount, click Create.

  2. On the Completing the New Discount Wizard page, to add coupons, click Add Coupons. To complete the wizard and not add coupons, click Finish.
