How to Connect to a Remote Server

For the latest version of Commerce Server 2007 Help, see the Microsoft Web site.

Typically, when you connect to a Commerce Server Staging (CSS) server from the CSS Microsoft Management Console (MMC), your logon account is used. To connect to a remote CSS server, you can specify an MMC authentication account. This is useful when your logon account is not recognized by the remote CSS server or if you want to connect by using an administrator account defined for that server.

The MMC authentication account consists of a user name and password. The user name and password you specify must be defined on the remote CSS server and belong to the CSS security group that supports the CSS tasks you want to perform on the server.

Note

The MMC authentication account is used for remote administration of a server. It should not be confused with the default authentication or project-specific authentication accounts that are used to deploy content.

Follow these steps to establish or change the MMC authentication account credentials for connecting to a remote CSS server from the CSS console. This account is used by MMC to connect to another CSS server for remote administration.

To connect to a remote server

  1. From the CSS MMC, right-click the remote server you want to connect to, and then click Set Authentication.

  2. In Connection Settings for Host<server name> dialog box, type the user name and password of the account you want to use, and then click OK.

    Note

The user name and password you specify must be defined on the remote CSS server and belong to the CSS security group that supports the CSS tasks you want to perform on the server.

  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for all remote CSS servers with which you want to connect.
