Xbox LIVE Update Launches Today
August 11 marks the launch of the new Xbox LIVE Update, which you’ll receive the next time you connect to Xbox LIVE. At first glance, it doesn’t look radically different that the New Xbox Experience launched last year, but a closer examination shows lots of new and improved features. Some of these are in Marketplace, where you can now rate content, download full games like Mass Effect from the new Games on Demand section, and buy slick new outfits for your avatar in the new Avatar Marketplace. The Netflix support has been beefed up as well, with the ability to add new releases to your queue right on your Xbox 360, and to watch movies with Parties of your friends.
Plus there are tons of smaller but appreciated tweaks and new features, including an improved Achievements view, support for additional HDTV and monitor settings, the ability to use PayPal to buy MS points, and an indicator on your Gamer Card that shows how long you’ve been a LIVE Gold member.
Watching a show on Netflix with friends.
For the full scoop, we have an overview video from Tina Wood, and Elle and yours truly spell out the enhancements in detail. Check our our Xbox LIVE Update feature on Xbox.com.
Now I have to go resist the temptation to buy my avatar that lightsaber he’s asking for. “But you’ve barely played with your new RC Warthog!”

The party could be a great benefit. However, to be good, it needs more features. The number one feature that needs to be implemented, is jamming music with your friends. If when you were in a party, one of the group could initiate party tunes. Which would play through all players speakers (not headset). This would boost party play for sure. Can you imagine playing some bad a** rock tunes while playing your favorite 1st person shooter. TOOOO SICK!Anonymous

I like the avatar marketplace, but some of the items are extremely overpriced. I would buy the Lightsaber for my avatar but it is not worth 400 mps. That is a ridiculous price. Other stuff is pretty cool thoughAnonymous
August 11, 2009
It would be nice if I could actually download the update...apparently many people are experiencing the same problem...too bad that the update has to be applied before I can play online again...I think the update rollout is a massive failure...this should be seamless to all customersAnonymous

I looked around and haven't seen any specific details on the avatar rewards. I'm sure it hasn't been fully implemented yet or they would have shown us some details on how to earn avatar props and gear.....right? Lightsaber would be awesome to earn in game.400msp?Anonymous

i think that this update was really cool but i also agree with almost all the other ppl wats up with the outrageous prices i mean it wold be cool to have a lightsaber or a gears 2 out fit but not for those pricesAnonymous

ok so i like the market place but as mike said the stuff is overpriced 400 mp each for a lightsaber and armour what? its digital clothes guys at least 100 mp if it were that you'd get more downloads and money. but thats my opinion. the netflix thing good job :]and onther thing on avatar stuff when you go to the friends section on the dashboard my pom poms dont apear those were overpriced but i have mp laying around and it was faf.Anonymous

The update bricked my console before it even finished. It never did the auto-reboot after the update completed (if it even completed in the first place I didn't sit and babysit the download bar). Much frustration ensued and I documented everything on my blog @ www.thehelpfulhacker.com - if they don't make it right I've got an attorney on retainer who's gonna help me make them make it right. Check my blog for detailed records of my support calls and emails before they acknowledged this was an "emerging issue". At least they want me to be "part of the solution" now.Anonymous

HOW DO YOU GET AVATAR AWARDS?(be specific plz)Anonymous
August 11, 2009
Yeah, I just tried applying this update. The first time it failed and RROD'd (0020). After some work it managed to boot again, was able to play Red Faction with no problems, so I figured I'd try the update again. This time the download finished entirely, but when it reset it RROD'd yet again. I managed to yet again get it to start up and it looks like it took the update, but it still tends to RROD several times before a successful boot. The first time it really did seem that the system was bricked. I tried removing power and the HDD like a hundred times, not sure if it helped but eventually it did boot and realize that it failed to update. Don't give up on it, hopefully it is just the 360 being a little stubborn. Hope this gets fixed, its annoying to have to keep rebooting the 360 until it finally decides to wake up. :(Anonymous

I don't know if the two have anything to do with each other, I'm assuming they do. Since I've downloaded the new update, the audio will cut out for just a few seconds. So far it has been continuous while trying to play games, watch Netflix movies and online videos. There is no problem with the visuals just the audio. Has anyone had any problems since the update? Is there something I can do as far as settings to correct this? I'm using an HDMI cable and my audio settings are set to Dolby digital, not the 5.1.Anonymous

After the update, I put on a movie from netflix, once you stop the movie, the screen splits into two. Now you can’t play any games because the screen is split into two. Fail, first we have to pay for gold status to simply play games online, then we have to pay for wireless adapters, play and charge kits, bigger hard drives, gamer pics, themes, now premium themes, now avatar clothes?! why can't achievement points be worth something like ms points? Most if not all of these things are free on PSN! Also now my dashboard runs at a snails pace, some of my arcade titles reverted back to trial versions and it says that I am only a 1 year vet, not that that actually matters to me, but I can't help but think microsoft doesn't consider our interests or financial statuses as important in offering products to it's customers.Anonymous

DO not download new update if u wish to keep using your xbox. My roomate downloaded the Aug 11th update and got instant 3 red rings now has to send it in. I download the new update and bam e74 error bottom right red ring. Call it what you want but for two xboxs to go down right after installing the new update seems really fishy. So, I haven't updated yet, and now I'm scared to. I can't risk having my xbox crash or anything, like I really have money to go out and just buy a new one. I don't want to get ripped off if it happens, I call customer support, and I'm told something bout a bad warranty or that it's not free to fix. Why would they do this? Either I update and risk losing my xbox, or I don't update and can't play live.Anonymous

the avatar is a feature of xbox live the clothes are part of the avatar, so why the fck do we have to pay for them at all we pay fckin $60 bucks for the xbox live subscription thats all that we should have to pay, i mean i can understand paying for everything else excpt the COd map packs, because they sck on another note, why the fck do u not have a U.S. Army paratrooper/tank crewman or even just a standard combat uniform and weps i mean im in the military as a paratrooper n i wanna dress my guy how i dress every day come on xbox live why do u s*ck so much, one more thing ive played played on live for 4-5 years so epic failure on the number of years i played fck u Microsoft im switching to PS3 goobyeAnonymous

It looks like Microsoft is only going to fix your XBox 360 if it falls under warranty. This is bogus. We ALL know that this software update either bricked or glitched these consoles, and it looks like Microsoft is even aware of this because they've admitted the software was the likely cause to some who have called in. It is a huge inconvenience just to have to send my 360 in and wait weeks to get it back over no fault of my own. You actually expect some of us to pay for something your update broke? Just a spit in the face to paying customers...Anonymous

Update f'ed my system. Unit freezes within 5 minutes of boot, sometimes at dashboard, other times immediately after starting game. Am I (and obviously many others) seriously being asked to pay Microsoft $100 or more for breaking my machine with their software update? Sounds like Sony might earn alot of new business.Anonymous

August 15, 2009
I am not saying that getting an RROD should happen at all cause it should never have happened in the first place. As some may already know it is a manufacuring problem with the hardware. The reason some of you are getting RROD'ed is because the update requires a lot of computing cycles to install and implement. Also if you got the RROD after the update was installed the new Xbox dashboard is requiring more of its hardware computing power which will keep your hardware at a HIGHER HEAT LEVEL FOR LONGER periods of time. Truthfully all Microsoft needs to do, at this point, is to keep/install the NEWEST heatsinks they are rolling out and get rid of the X-clamps with something that will keep the heatsinks on tight in all new systems and the repaired ones. This will get rid of 'all user frustration/wasted money' and on Microsoft's end save them a ton of money in the long run and most importantly to them KEEP XBOX FANS!Anonymous

The rating feature is a really useful tool for all gamers, but I must say that I was disturbed by the avatar marketplace, IMO it shouldn't cost "real" money that we earned doing "real" work to buy virtual clothes/accessories, why not make some kind of virtual-money-earning system to buy that imaginary stuff? Sounds to me like that would be fair at least. I mean c'mon, doesn't Microsoft have enough money already? 'Course not, it was rhetoric...Anonymous

You can add my elite 360 to the ever-growing list of people who have had their systems "bricked" by this update. After the update my 360 would freeze up within minutes of restarting (even without the hard drive and accessories attached). It was fortunately still under warrany, but, that is only because this elite was actually a replacement of an elite I had that gave me an E74.Anonymous
