"Microsoft Document Explorer cannot be shown because the specified help collection 'ms-help://MS.MSDNQTR.v90.en' is invalid".

We worked on an issue where launching help from within the Visual Studio IDE throws an error message

"Microsoft Document Explorer cannot be shown because the specified help collection 'ms-help://MS.MSDNQTR.v90.en' is invalid".

This message was throw whether the help was set in the VS IDE to external or integrated help.

Here are some of the troubleshooting steps we took along the way to resolve this issue.

Got to Add/remove programs

Select “Document explorer 2008”

Click on “Change” and repair it.

Tried to open MSDN library 2008 from Start->All programs-> Microsoft Developer Network -> MSDN for Visual Studio 2008. It still threw the same error.

Rebooted the machine. Now, we were able to open the MSDN documentation from Start->All programs-> Visual studio 2008 documentation. It worked fine.

However, we tried to launch MSDN again from the All Programs -> Microsoft Developer Network -> MSDN for VS 2008. we still got the error.

We repaired MSDN library 2008 and rebooted the machine. That fixed the issue

To summarize this experience. If you get the error when launching MSDN Library 2008 "Microsoft Document Explorer cannot be shown because the specified help collection 'ms-help://MS.MSDNQTR.v90.en' is invalid".

We could try the steps below:

1. Repair Document explorer 2008

2. Reboot the machine

3. Repair MSDN library 2008

4. Reboot the machine.
