.NET CF
I recently read a report from the European market analysis firm Datamonitor on the competitive state of mobile business application development tools. I was very happy to see that they predict Windows Mobile and the .NET Compact Framework as best positioned for success in the next 12-18 months over all other technologies.
Attempts to mobilize PC client applications by simply moving them wholesale to devices, or depending on remote access projection tend to fail because of transient network connectivity and usability issues. The current wave of mobile applications are what we call smart client applications, and tend to have a UI that is highly adapted to the device and network experience and hit the back end data source either directly via web services, or indirectly via a local database and replication. The combined strength of the Windows Mobile PDA platform, the .NET Compact Framework and Visual Studio makes this an ideal environment for such applications.
