The 2012 Hispanic Youth Institute knocks down educational obstacles

Microsoft Silicon Valley loves a good challenge, and we love to create opportunities for empowering youth. That’s why we helped bring Hispanic Youth Institute to Silicon Valley three years ago. HYI guides Hispanic students to realize their dreams of higher education and career success, particularly in critical STEM professions.

Earlier this month, 120 high school students from six east San Jose high schools spent the weekend at Santa Clara University to immerse themselves in the 2012 Hispanic Youth Institute. This unique motivational program helped them discover how to break down both real and perceived barriers to college access.

These students seized the opportunity to set themselves up for success by diving into HYI’s programs, including:

  • College and career workshops
  • Networking opportunities with local Hispanic professionals
  • Meetings with college admissions officers
  • Interacting with near-peer mentors
  • Finding role models in inspirational speakers

We also love that those fortunate enough to be members of the HYI Class of 2012 are encouraged to pay forward what they’ve learned by promoting educational excellence and opportunities to peers back in their high schools.

Over the past three years, Hispanic Youth Institute has matured into an amazing program in Silicon Valley. Check out this video where Sid Espinosa, Microsoft Silicon Valley director of corporate citizenship, explores the inspiring leadership and success stories resulting from HYI.  Invest in our community by spreading the good word about HYI, so more teens can imagine and realize the success they deserve.
