DPM 2010 upgrade (from DPM2007 SP1)

I have recently completed one DPM upgrade project wherein the partner was running 2007SP1 x64 setup and the reasons for upgrade to DPM 2010 were obvious :)

- Support for CSV and Live Migration

- Exchange 2010

- SharePoint 2010

The current platform was  -

OS – Windows 2008 x64 SP2 (so the upgrade was possible as DPM2010 is only 64bit)

Download the upgrade advisor now!

The steps that I had followed are as follows  -

1. Install latest DPM 2007 rollup package (https://support.microsoft.com/kb/979970)(Optional)
2. Close DPM administrator console and DPM management shell if opened.
3. Launch DPM 2010 RTM Eval  / RTM setup and proceed by clicking on Install DPM

My current setup was running Windows 2008 SP2 x64 so there were two pre-requisites required before the upgrade

- Powershell 2.0

- KB975759 hotfix

4. Complete the installation wizard and restart the computer to complete the upgrade

5. Upgrade agents on production servers
Note: If rollup KB976542 (version 2.0.8861.0) or later is installed, you can upgrade the agent from the DPM Administrator Console. If this rollup is not installed, you should upgrade the agents manually by running the DPMAgentInstaller.
6. Run consistency check for all the protected Datasources
7. Uninstall DPM 2007 SQL instance (Optional) if there are no issues after upgrade. However, if you're looking for downgrade then DPM 2007 DPMDB is required.

I hope this helps IT folks who are looking for some guidance around DPM 2010 upgrades.
