How many internal use rights licenses do I get with my Competency, Advanced Competency, or Subscription in MPN?

A few questions I have seen and received from some partners regarding internal use rights (IUR) software that they receive at various levels within the Microsoft Partner Network are:

1) When I earn a competency or advanced competency, how many licenses of Microsoft software do I receive to use in my business (Internal User Rights/IUR licenses) and for which products do I receive those licenses for?

2) If I receive an advanced competency, how many additional internal use rights licenses do I receive?

3) If I get a Microsoft subscription, such as the Microsoft Action Pack Solution Provider or Microsoft Action Pack Development and Design, how many IUR licenses do I receive and for which software?

4) Do the software internal use rights I receive vary by competency, advanced competency, or subscription I earn?

5) Where would I find out the various pieces of information above?

Now there is the new Microsoft Partner Network License Calculator available online that let’s you select the competency, advanced competency, or subscription you are interested in achieving and it will let you know how many internal use rights of Microsoft software you will have available to you. You can also select multiple competencies, or advance competencies, or any combination of these, and see what that combination provides to you as well. Also, to make it easier for you, once you select the various competencies, advanced competencies, or subscriptions that you are interested in, you can select the “Print View” option to get a nice formatted view of the internal use rights software that you can print off and view.

    Thanks Eric - as you know I've been a bit vocal on this topic as I'm concerned for the Gold Certified partners who might not qualify for the Advanced Competency and yet have been relying upon their internal use license grants...that can be a huge financial impact. One thing for Microsoft to think about in communication to partners is that frequently the business partnerships (including Microsoft) are managed in a different functional group than IT who typically manages software licensing. Might want to include communication of licensing changes to IT as one of the recommended steps (unfortunately this should be intuitive but often is not0. A couple of points for partners to be aware of are: (1) If your anniversary date is prior to Oct 10, 2010 and you complete your renewal prior to that time you will retain your current internal use license grants until your next anniversary (per a one-on-one discussion with the Microsoft Partner transition team); however; (2) your designation in the program (Competency or Advanced Competency) will change effective Oct 10, 2010 regardless of your anniversary date unless you've qualified and paid the fees as of that time (so for a Gold Partner who renewed February 28th of 2010, you will need to qualify for the advanced competency and pay the fee increase by October 10, 2010 or you will simply show at the Competency level on any Microsoft websites...you do get a bit of a price break as you pay the delta between the new "Competency" fee and the "Advanced Competency" fee. Several of our Software Asset Management clients are Microsoft Gold Certified Partners so we will be walking through these changes with them - there will be postings on our blog.
