Steven Nagy: MY first Silverlight App.
A local .NET developer whom is branching out into the Silverlight space has posted his first application, which is a simple tic tac toe game.
It's important to celebrate these style of applications from guys like Steven, as these are the ones that are branching into a new emerging technology with long-term focus and a simple attitude "May as well start now, rather then later".
I asked him how he's finding it all so far and this was his response:
I've found it alright, probably easier than my past investigations into Flash. But I’m a lot smarter than I use to be also. J
Sometimes when I create something in Orcas, open the Xaml in Blend and change something, save and close and open it in Orcas, the Xaml is no longer valid (eg. Textblock.Text property). I’m also surprised that you can’t open Xaml in Expression designer.
Of course I’m in n00bsville here and I might be missing stuff. I also tried installing 1.1 alpha on IE6 and got a simple “Install Failed” error.
I know its not full release and some of this stuff will be cleared up. I want to find the line where the switch between designer and developer is seamless. I don’t think that this is the case at the start of projects, but once the objects required are well established, then it would seem to be well integrated. Just my opinion, but maybe you’ll help clarify some of those things on Xbox night.
I see a lot of comments like this and so long as folks understand that this isn't about getting a complete RIA solution overnight with no effort using our beta/alpha versions you'll be fine. Silverlight takes a few knocks from blogger's/press online about how it doesn't have x and it doesn't have y etc, but at the end of the day that's why words like "alpha" are put into the brand to underpin "It's not done yet".
I highlighted Stevens progress today as it's great to see his attitude going forward, he understands that there is more to Silverlight then what he's seeing now and is extra keen to get on board first while it's not complex. I say this as when I first got my hands on Macromedia Royale (Adobe Flex) it was like Silverlight today, where it was still in somewhat of a raw state but as the technology progressed forward I grew with it and so on.
HTML was the same back in the early 1990's where as HTML grew, I did as well and so on..
Point is: Just goof off with Silverlight, and relax :)
I'd love to hear more "Hello World" style applications from all, as no matter how rough it is, it's much easier to just dump it online, blog about it! and others can see how you went through the delicate stages of riding the Silverlight bike for the first time, then slowly the training wheels begin to come off eventually.
I'd recommend following Steven's progress as we all start with the basics and grow.
