"Does anyone else have good examples of blogs being used in an academic research environment?"

I think this question is too specific. "Academic research" is a very open area. I haven't used a blog to document findings of experiments and such; yet. I document some of my projects and ideas on our ACM page here at MSU. That's as good as an example that comes to mind.

Most of my blog is academic, technical content @ http://cplan.cse.msu.edu

I use my blog sometimes to talk about coding issues I come across for my research. But thats on a personal level in the sense that its not a university wide phenomena to use blogging, at least at ASU. However, the university does use some "sponsored" students who blog on the university site to let prospective students know about the kind of things that happen at the uni in a students daily life.
