TechNet Update June Resources - Branch Office and TS
Over the last two weeks Jeff and I have been travelling around doing an update on Windows Server 2008 Branch Office technologies and another on Terminal Services. The slides for these are now available along with some other resources that could be handy:
- Branch Office Slides available here
- Terminal Services Slides available here
Mark and Kane who attended my Melbourne sessions have asked me about the printer push capability available in Windows Server 2003 R2 and also Windows Server 2008 to deliver printers to WinXP and Vista clients. Heres some resources to help you make it happen:
- Print Management Console Step by Step guide
- Windows Vista Print Management Step by Step (TechCentre info)
For those of you that didnt attend, most people dont know that they can now centrally manage printers and push out the printers to the clients without the use of the messy scripts you had to use before. It can actually be a much easier process! :)

It's nice to finally see some better print management in 2003 and 2008, although I'll bite my tongue commenting about that it SHOULD have been a feature of Active Directory/2000 7 years ago :) It's a shame you still can't designate a default printer for users. I work in schools, and (especially for our junior users), I need to automatically give them 2-3 printers (based on what machine they have logged into), as WELL as setting their default printer to be their closest one. And without using custom VBS scripting that I currently use, I see I still can't do that... and without that.. users are typically left with XPS Document Writer as their default printer, and get very confused when it asks them to save something, rather than print out a nice piece of paper! something for a service pack, guys? :) Rohan
