Microsoft Learning has just launched a fabulous career portal the provides detailed guidance on essential learning and skills required to qualify for various IT jobs.  Not only does it provide detailed a detailed description of various tech jobs, but it also provides links to online learning resources to help student gain the necessary skills to quality for those jobs.

Five major jobs roles are detailed: database administrator, server administrator, consumer support technician, web developer, and Windows developer.

Each role has its own page, and each page contains a detailed job description, lists of basic, intermediate and expert skills, typical required experience, scope of responsibility (Web Dev is 60 percent coding, 20 percent testing and 20 percent support and communication tasks), possible role names, and typical next position.  The page also contains comprehensive learning plans, recommended e-Learning courses (some of which are free to students in MSDNAA), applicable certification exams, Learning Snacks (short how-to videos), applicable webcasts on MSDN, and links to sources for getting experience such as contests, internships, etc. .

I really think the Microsoft Learning folks have really put together an amazing resource here.  The best I’ve seen in terms of connecting jobs, job prerequisites and required learning.  What a great resource. I highly recommend that both students and faculty check it out.
