Windows Server 2008 R2 Beta VDI Solution
VDI is attracting our enterprise customers for certain user scenarios. Most common user scenario is the task worker where they want to extend the the hardware lifecycle, improve desktop and application control and centralize the user data. Also contractors and external employees are strong candidates due the security and low-cost desktop provisioinig reasons.
Below is a R2 beta version based Microsoft VDI architecture which i envisioned and proofed for a leading manufacturing company. They want to provide VDI computing for almost 40% of their client base. Its based on the new VDI feature set of Microsft Windows Server 2008 R2 (currently in Beta)
This is a high-level overview of the architecture. The system components are as follows:
- Microsoft VDI clients: These are Windows 7 clients or any PC running RDC 6.1 and Internet Explorer 6
- Remote Desktop Web Access Server: Support VDI clients to access their Remote desktops from Web browsers.
- Remote Desktop Broker: Makes remote desktop resources available to VDI clients. Sends incoming connection requests to the right VM.emote resources
- Remote Desktop Server Redirector Farm: Provides redirection for VDI clients.communicates with the RD Broker
- Remote Desktop Virtualization Role : Hyper-V Servers enabled as RD Virtualization services which are hosting the virtual desktops
- User Profile Servers : User profile servers for user folder redirection
- Application Virtualization Servers : Applicatition Virtualization Servers for streaming role based applications.
- Virtual Desktop Provisioning and Management: SCVMM 2008 Servers for virtual desktop lifecycle management.
- Active Directory: User level assignment for virtual desktops and virtual applications.
