Medical Students Tackle Anaemia by Taking a ‘Selfie’

Despite the lack of a formal IT education, medical students Jennifer Tang and Jarrel Seah from Australia have created an app called Eyenaemia – a non-invasive, cost-effective solution that allows people to use their cell phones to screen for anaemia from anywhere.

The inspiration for Eyenamia came while the two were on medical work placement in Mildura, a rural farming community in northwestern Victoria, Australia. The duo realised that a high percentage of the population was anaemic and could be more easily diagnosed with a simple app they could use themselves – with the ubiquitous ‘selfie’.

As the 2014 winner of Microsoft’s Worldwide Imagine Cup Finals, Jennifer and Jarrel won $50,000. The prize money has helped them work on bringing the Eyenaemia app to market and make it widely available to everyone.
