Finished reading: Quite a lot ;-) & Currently Reading Flatland by Abbott
The Republic - Plato
Described as the foundation of western philosophy it's extremely well know. It's a challenging book, it'll make you think. Plato describes different forms of government; their strengths and weaknesses. He looks at justice and his idea of a perfect society. Some sections describe historical events exceptionally well and others seem abhorrent by today’s standards. Definitely worth reading.
Welcome To The Monkey House - Kurt Vonnegut
A collection of short stories by Vonnegut. Deeply funny. I finished this far too quickly, it's easy to get sucked into. Vonnegut is always great to read.
The Elegant Universe - Brian Greene
Brian Greene seems to have made quite a name for himself with this book. It's a relatively accessible book on superstring theory. He also takes some time to describe general relativity and quantum mechanics and how string theory claims to link the two. It's interesting subject matter, but gets really complex in places - but that's the nature of the matter (or anti-matter ;-)). I've read a couple of other books on quantum mechanics and string theory so I was at least familiar with the subject. Anyone without some physics background may have difficulty with the book I think.
Flatland - Edwin Abbott
I started reading this last night. It's about a two dimensional world, it's a satire, it's about geometry, it provides a way to understand the concept of a universe with more than three spatial dimensions. It's hard to describe. It's only short, easy to read and I suspect I'll finish it today.
