HTC Universal device pictures (more from GSMWC)

Here are some pictures of the new HTC landscape / portrait + keyboard device code named Universal on the msmobiles web site. This device is announced to sell as the MDA IV from TMobile and might make it out with other manufacturers as well. The device is running Pocket PC, and in landscape mode opens to show a full QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard can be stowed behind the screen and the device used in the more traditional portrait mode.

Specs for this are quite interesting: it has 2 cameras! One for use when opened in landscape mode and points at the users face, the other is in the back of the keyboard pointing away from the user when the keyboard stowed.

Even more interestingly the device has 3 radio's including 3G (3G, Wifi and GSM/GPRS) and its got a VGA resolution screen:

Processor: 520Mhz
GSM: quad-band
Radio: 3G phone + Wi-Fi + GPRS and UMTS + Bluetooth
Full Qwerty keyboard
2 cameras
VGA 640x480

Definately one for the shopping list! Only 10 months to Christmas :)

This phone seems great on paper and the photos, I hope it will be released on U.S. soil. I currently own a Nokia 7710 which is to me a fantastic phone, the HTC universal (MDA IV) is based on the same idea of mobile office, also another contender is the Nokia 9500-Communicator, the HTC universal is the next evolution in the rapidly growing genre of PDA phones. Also i would only hope that this fantastic piece of technology will be available unlocked so other customers of GSM networks can enjoy this little wonder. The HTC reminds me of the HipTop SideKick which i dont believe is offered unlocked, also a great phone that people like myself missed out on because it is only offered through T-Mobile, big blunder by HipTop.

It is about time the Carriers recognize that it will be the PDA functionality/Capability combined with a true Broadband Wireless (WiFi/WLAN)functions that will rule. The VOice piece will eventually be moving to the WLAN/WiFi world as well allowing one to operate both in a WLAN/WiFi world and then transition to a Cell based GSM/CDMA Narrowabd world when we move out to rural areas.
