March update to Lync Windows Store App now available

Lync Meeting presenters: this Lync update is for you! The most common feature request from our users is that they want the modern app to have more of the features available in the desktop app. We continue to listen to feedback and starting today, you can now manage your meeting participants from the modern Lync app. 

In addition to new features, we also continue to improve the ease of use for Lync. We think you’ll like what we’ve done in this update. Here’s an overview of what’s new:

Manage meeting participants individually or as a group. You can mute a participant, send a private IM, view their contact card, promote to presenter or demote to an attendee. You can also invite more participants, mute all audience, and admit people to the meeting who are waiting in the lobby.

Easily access conversation controls when you are in a call or meeting. All the controls are right at the bottom of the screen, which you can use to quickly mute/unmute your audio, view the participants, start or stop your video, or leave the conversation.

Use the new Meet Now feature to quickly start an impromptu meeting and collaborate on a subject that requires immediate attention- without having to schedule a meeting in advance.

 

Meet Now to start a new meeting

Pin your meetings list as a tile to your Start screen to easily see your meeting schedule. The tile lists up to three meetings on your calendar in the next twelve hours.

Pin the Join/Meet Now tile to your Start screen to easily and quickly join scheduled meetings or start a new Lync Meeting. If you have a Lync Meeting now or starting soon, tapping the tile opens Lync and joins the meeting. At other times, tapping the tile lets you start a new, ad-hoc meeting.

Enjoy improved functionality of screen readers voicing fly-out menus.

This update also has fixes for some problems that prevented a small number of users from signing in to Lync. If you’ve had sign-in problems, click Delete my sign-in info on the sign-in page after installing the update and try signing in again. If you continue to have problems, please contact your technical support team.

For most users of Windows 8.1, Lync will upgrade automatically within 24 hours. To get the update sooner, search for Lync and click Install. You can tell when you have the update because you’ll see a message box saying “We’ve updated Lync!” the next time you go to the app.

    @Uri - Meet Now is a command that has been around Lync for a long time. (In Lync desktop, you can find this by clicking the arrow next to the Options (gear) button.) When you start a Meet Now meeting, we create a new conference on the server in your virtual meeting space, equivalent to scheduling a meeting. All behavior in the conference is the same as for any scheduled meeting you would create. Are you having problems that you need to troubleshoot Meet Now meetings?

    Is there a way of geting the version number out of the lync store app? In Settings --> Info there is no Number visible. On Android i am able to see the version number under Options --> Info

    @John - This should not be happening. We have heard a few anecdotal reports of this behavior, but we have never been able to reproduce this inhouse or look at logs from anyone who is seeing it. We would greatly appreciate working with you to get app logs so we can debug this? If you'd like to help, please contact me at phillip.garding at Microsoft.com. Thank you.

    @Andres - You can find the version number in Settings -> Permissions. (Windows places the version number there.) The version number of this update is 16.0.1929.1162.

    How come it takes forever for the Lync modern app to logon? Even after this update it won't open in a timely fashion. I've been trying to connect to the server for the past 7 mins and it won't connect.

    Is there still not a way to configure inactive and away timers? In the desktop program, I can set an inactive time of an hour and then an away time of another hour and then use my tablet for Lync and reading documentation, in IE, with the new split screen feature in Windows 8.1. Currently, I run both the desktop program and the Windows Store app and the desktop program keeps my inactive/away correct. It would be really nice to be able to not have to run the desktop program.

    Will there ever be an option to disable Smart Crop? I like to use this App for our small conference rooms, but the Smart Crop ruins it

    When will Lync 2013 client be available for Android tablets? For some reason MS has decided to allow Lync to be installed on an Android smartphone but, not on a Android tablet.

    Is there plans to add the option to turn of smart cropping in the store app also? Like in the feb. update for the 2013 Lync client, "crop and center my video in meetings. This is something I and I guess a lot of other users would wan't. We are using the new Logitech cc3000 cameras in our meeting rooms on PC's with Win8.1, touch screen and the Lync app, but smart cropping is messing the use up!!

    Can you please comment if any near future release of the Lync App let's us deactivate smart cropping and face tracking as the Lync 2013 client does now after update?
