Differentiating between Stages of Enhanced Presence.
Why would this information be important to me?
- Users at Stage 1 or Stage 2 are unable to sign in via Communicator Web Access (2007 release), Office Communicator Phone Edition, etc.
- Users at Stage 3 will not be able to sign in via legacy clients such as Windows Messenger, Office Communicator 2005, Messenger for Mac 6.0.3, etc.
- Determining user progress during Migration from LCS 2005 to OCS 2007, such as verifying whether users have moved to Office Communicator 2007.
A SIPenabled user can be in three main stages of Enhanced Presence.
Stage 1. The user account Enhanced Presence setting is unchecked.
a. This is accomplished when a User is moved from previous version (ie, LCS 2005) to OCS 2007.
Stage 2. The user account Enhanced Presence setting is checked, but they have not signed in with Office Communicator 2007.
a. This can be accomplished by enabling a New User for SIP, homed on an OCS 2007 Server, but not signing in with Office Communicator 2007.
Stage 3. User account Enhanced Presence setting is checked and they have signed in with Communicator 2007.
How to determine a Users stage of Enhanced Presence.
Review the Users Enhanced Presence check box.
a. User account -> Communications tab -> Configure button -> Enable Enhanced Presence check boxIf the check box is clear, the User is at Stage 1.
If the check box is checked, the User is either Stage 2 or Stage 3.
Differentiating between Stage 2 and Stage 3 requires looking in the database of the Users home server. This can be accomplished by using an OCS 2007 Resource Kit utility, DbAnalyze.exe.
Let us assume we have two users, James@nwtraders.com and Kevin@nwtraders.com. Both users have the Enable enhanced presence box checked and we need to determine if they are Stage 2 or Stage 3.
By running the below command, we can obtain the necessary output to make this determination.
a. DbAnalyze.exe /report:user /user:username@<domainname>First we check James:
Viewing his results we look for the RichMode value:
The RichMode value is TRUE, this means James is at Stage 3. He will be able to sign in via Communicator Web Access (2007 release), Office Communicator Phone Edition, but will not be able to sign in via legacy clients.
Now we check Kevin:
Viewing his results we look for the RichMode value:
The RichMode value is FALSE, this means Kevin is at Stage 2. He may continue using legacy clients such as Office Communicator 2005.
