Installing & Configuring BizTalk Server 2006 Beta 1 - I want your feedback!!!
Now that BizTalk Server 2006 Beta 1 is out the door (Yay!!), one of the first things you will be doing is checking out the installation instructions. The installation instructions for BizTalk Server 2006 Beta 1 are available at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=46922. For this release, we created separate platform based installation guides.
The following guides are available:
- Installing and Configuring BizTalk Server 2006 Beta 1 on Windows XP
- Installing and Configuring BizTalk Server 2006 Beta 1 on Windows Server 2003
- Installing and Configuring BizTalk Server 2006 Beta 1 on Windows 2000 Server
This is (what I consider) a welcomed departure from the 2004 version.
All three guides walk you step-by-step through installing a complete setup of BizTalk Server 2006 Beta 1 on a single server using the new "Basic" configuration. Although "Custom" configuration is not documented in full, it is partially documented through the F1 help feature of the configuration tool and is fully supported for this release. I'd be happy to post a mini visual walkthrough on the custom configuration tool.
Setting up BizTalk Server 2006 in a multi-server configuration will be documented at a later time.
I would love to hear any and ALL feedback you have on the installation and configuration guides for this release. It will only help us for the next one!!

Much prefer the configuration steps in the new 2006 version. I like the fact you can easily add / remove from an existing configuration without just /u and blowing everything away. Cool. - Anonymous

The guides are superb and I like the way they are structured as a steb by step.
The guides currently talk about using SQL Server 2000, will these be updated to reflect SQL 2005?
I have installed SQL 2005 CTP June release, with Notification, Reporting and Analysis services. I managed to install and configure BiTalk 2006 Beta1 on it fine without any issues EXCEPT, I am unable to create the BiTalk Analysis databases. For some reason in the Configuration it will fail to recognise my Analysis server. Has anyone encountered this? - Anonymous

You might want to make a note somewhere in the installation guide about the version of .NET 2.0 needed. The only way I found this out was when I noticed it in the ASP.NET configuration of the Default Web Site. Without having the right versions of all the other products running on .NET 2.0 you end up in conflict land and nothing works right.
After I finally got the right bits together for BizTalk 2006, Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 I had no troubles installing BizTalk 2006 on top of SQL Server 2005.
In fact after spending several hours installing all of the pre-requisites and getting the platform ready for BizTalk, the install was a non-event. The Complete Install option and Default Configuration wizards were so un-eventful that I thought, "Is this all there is to it?"
You've done a great job with the install. Now if you can find a way to make the pre-requisite installs just as easy, then even my Grandmother could install it.

I found the installation of BizTalk 2006 Beta 1 on Windows Server 2003 SP1 a breeze in comparison to 2004. I like the new configuration wizard, seems much more informative in what each config section is used for. - Anonymous

How similar are 2004 and 2006?
Will the Biztalk 2004 quickstart work on 2006? - Anonymous
