Tokens

Tokens are markers that we can use in the documentation to represent product and feature names that might change, and reusable text that we don't want to type manually in a bunch of topics. When the build team converts the XML source files into the final compiled Help, they pull the token's replacement value from a separate file. Any changes to the text or product name are made in only one place, and they appear in all the appropriate topics.

We're looking at how to expand our use of tokens in the next writing cycle. I talked with Arwyn Carroll, a technical editor on the Windows Server team, about how they have been using tokens.
