TechNet Presents Follow Up – Windows 7 Deployment Topics

I delivered three sessions on Windows 7 Deployment over the past week.  I was in Phoenix on September 15th, Irvine on September 20th and Los Angeles on September 21st.  I wanted to follow up with links to information that was mentioned in the sessions.

I posted the slide decks that I used to www.slideshare.net/harold.wong.  There are three of them and they are titled “Bust the Myth Upgrade XP to Windows 7 Final”, “Microsoft deployment toolkit 2010 Final” and “Application Compatibility Final”.  If you have any questions, feel free to ping me.

Here are the links to the tools.

I was able to have the AZ Systems Management User Group leader, Mike Terrill, deliver the Advanced MDT 2010 session and share real world consulting experience in all three cities.  If you would like to follow up with Mike with any questions regarding large Windows 7 Deployments (especially using SCCM), please feel free to contact him at mike.terrill@1e.com.  You can also find the 1E technical blog here: https://www.1e.com/techblog/.  I want to thank Mike for taking time out of his time to travel to Irvine and Los Angeles with me to deliver the sessions.  I also want to thank his wife and daughters for letting him go and being away from the family when he didn’t need to.

For those of you in the Phoenix area who are interested in attending / joining the Arizona Systems Management User group, the group website is: https://www.azsmug.org.

During the Phoenix event, I had an attendee ask if it was possible to configure XP Mode on an instance of Windows 7 installed in a virtual machine.  I decided to test this out to find out first hand.  I brought up a Windows 7 Ultimate install on my Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V box.  The XP Mode bits installed just fine, but when I went to configure the XP Mode machine, the entire VM locked up.  No matter what I tried, I could not get XP Mode to work.  I figured that was the case, but I had to test it out to be sure.  It is true that we do not support virtualization within a virtualized instance.

If I missed something, please let me know.  Thanks!
